'84 628csi Throttle cuts out

As the title says, occasionally when I give it some revs the throttle just stops, no response at all and then it comes back a little after.

Now im thinking it may be the AFM as it appears to be a reconditioned unit and aged at that. Or possible the TPS.

any suggestions or things i can check before i buy new parts?

I had the same issue years ago in my M6, AFM was dying and I had to replace it.
