Was looking at ways to help this little M30B35 breath a little better. I ran across a guy selling a Dinan Carbon Fiber CAI - after looking at some pictures I believe it was from an e36. Had the right bends and a 3.5 inch dia. With a little modification, reducing the length by 4” and adding a silicone 3” - 3.5” step connector and a cone filter. Total investment $120.
The results much deeper sound at full throttle. Maybe a little gain in HP. Won’t be able to tell till we put it on the dyno, but that will be after I install this the new intake manifold modified for the large throttle body. I really want to get rid of the AFM and go to a MAF setup.
But for the little investment- the sound improvement enhancement goes nicely with the SuperSprint headers and exhaust system.
I expect you guys will bash me for doing this - but I thought I would share it with those who what to play with a Cold Air Intake. It can be done easily using the e36 Dinan Carbon Fiber Intake Tube.
Cheers
Rick

No bashing here! The only fault I can see with that CAI is that it's not drawing as much cold air as hot, especially being on the exhaust side of the mill. If you could build a containment wall around it so it has to draw air from in front of the radiator, it'll work a lot better, maybe actually give you a couple hp over the stock setup that most CAI makers claim. Remember, the full stock setup has a duct that pulls air from outside the engine compartment. It's done like that for a reason. I have a CAI on my 95 M3, not as nice as the one you used. I do love the sound when you go WOT.

When I had my upgraded M30-B34 with B35 Hartge head raising CR from 8:1 to 10:1
the tuners said CAI would do very little to gain performance or horsepower.
The cold air intake on the e24 is a very good system and don't waste your money
on an aftermarket CAI.

First, anyone claiming HP gains from a cold intake alone is full of it. Second, if there is not a box built around the filter end, all you have is a hot air intake and are defeating the purpose - Dinan "cool" factor or not.
