Rear Muffler.....again

Post by smtguy »

I got lucky last time and found an ANSA NOS rear replacement muffler for my '83. It fit perfectly, and I figured I would be done for a while. Nope, it is rusted out in 3 years. So now what do I do? I don't believe the rear mufflers that fit '85-'89 models will fit. Other than to custom fabricate one, does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks, but the fitment guide says it won't fit.

I've had the same problem as my 633 is a different animal from a 635 . I had a conversation with an engineer at APEX Emissions which made these in the past. There may be a fit with a Mercedes muffler but i wouldn't bet on it. Perhaps the 635 rear section would fit with appropriate bashing and i am at the point where it may make sense.

I hear what you say about the "bashing" and I did indeed have the same thoughts, but that would only work if the pipes are in the right place and the bends and hangers are the same as what we need to fit properly. I find it difficult to believe that there are not enough '83-'84 e24s still out there where one of these muffler manufacturers' wouldn't make money. Clearly they would have no other competitors. It appears that the same muffler is used on the same years 533i.

Does it have to be an oem muffler? If not, you could use something like a Flowmaster 50 series muffler with a 2-1 adapter. You can order that in real 304 stainless, that should last a very long time.

I have a 1982 633 CSi and recently looking for a rear muffler, very had to find anything that fits or looks original until I found Supersprint in Italy. Also sold at Schmiedmann. Here are two links that will take you to their catalouges. I also called their customer service to confirm fitment.
Great looking and sounding stainless steel rear exhaust
