In two weeks I'll get my car back from BMW Classic.

Motor is still running good so no big mechanics on finally. Drive train, suspensions are very good too.

But I had to change the clutch, few details on the gearbox, new front brake calipers, new windscreen, ...

Few pictures from BMW Classic

Orval2,

Thanks for the updates. I had a few questions about BMW Classic. Are you having them do restoration work or just maintenance? If just maintenance, I am curious why you chose BMW Classic over a more local BMW mechanic. My assumption here is that BMW Classic is not inexpensive.

Looking forward to more updates.

Take care,

Hello,

At the beginning I sent my car to BMW Classic for a motor revision. I was searching for a good mechanics in my area but when I was mentioning M88 as motor reference, they were not knowing it, even they present themself as BMW specialist.
BMW dealer are not making motor revision, they are sending them to mechanics too (for old motor).
So I sent my car to BMW classic as they have M specialist.

They have fully inspected my car (for free - if repair is done by them) and the motor does not need a revision yet, despite its 245.000 kms. But they found other issues, some minors some not.
- find from where I got wind noise (windscreen)
- Clutch is almost dead
- Gearbox leakage
- Right front brake caliper defective
...
And they have also done big motor service.

Their price can be compared to the dealer price, except there is no working hour charge. Just fixed amount per job.

Finally, my repair is nothing for them, as some people are making full restoration for much much much more bigger amount than me.

Question about the turbo . . .

Post by GRNSHRK »

Orval, was that BMW turbo an actual road going version, with plates and everything

Didn't think that any of them actually made it to the street :-k

Nice pix though, even with dirty cars, looks like it was a hoot

2002 Turbo was not road legal version. It is one of the prototype.
That rally can be compared (smaller) with Villa d'Este.
The prototype was participating to a elegance concourse, not use for the rally

Nice to have a workshop be honest enough to say it doesn't need work done.

The m88 does need periodical re-shimming of the valve clearances. Also it's a good idea to inspect the inning chain for slop etc. I'm upgrading mine from a single to a dual timing chain shortly just collecting parts now and work will start some time in May 2013. I am also installing an upgraded balancer hub so the engine can rev harder safely and some adjustable cam wheels from VAC Motorsport in the USA so I will be able to "dial in" the cams correctly

Well, I just got a call from BMW Classic.

My car is in the truck to Essen.

Here is what has been done accordence last quote:
- Big engine maintenance: settings, fluids, testing, ...
- gearbox seals (leaking before)
- clutch (with new bearing,...)
- Parasite wind noise passenger side: it mainly came from the windshield seal but also from a not correct screw in the passenger mirror
- New battery
- Front brake calipers.
- Front wheel bearings

and this is not all. After additional works were done without charge:

- ODB repaired
- Heating maintened
- New windshield
- battery plug replaced

They have not work on the airconditioning because I was not able to join them on time. They also saw that my gas gauge was not going well but too late to fix the problem.

Finally, the note will be less salty over ? 1,000 compared to what was told me.

Thanks for the update! It's great seeing your car again. It looks in lovely shape. I had missed the post where you got your car back from BMW Classic. It sounds like you were satisfied with their work. That's good to hear.

Take care,

Hey ! I have just seen I haven't updated you about the work at BMW Classic.
The car has been expertised back.
While I got it, it was expertised at 16.000€ (22.000$) and after the visit at BMW Classic but also due to the other works (suspension, drive train, ....) it has been expertised at 30.000€ (41.000$). So I was really happy despite my insurance increase (full coverage).

The car had a little oil leakage but it has been fixed at my BMW dealer (it was at the upper motor side).
For the rest, it is still going smooth.
I am delaying the motor revision as it runs well (compression still good and all horsepower still there 274CV). It just smokes a bit time-to-time.

Image

I will first replace the front spoiler (I have one new), respray the front wings if needed and restore the paint and remove all little blushes. Also, I will clean the roof inside and think about the airco replacement.

So still a lot to do but I am perfectionist. However, I do have time as I keep my car and I still enjoy to drive it.

If the smoke is from sudden deceleration from high rpm it can be cauged from the intake plenum effectivly being an oil/air seperator.

A chap called Winfred on here installed win internal copper tube in the manifold from the breather pipe to just over the top of the oil return line to the sump. This supposedly minimises or eliminates it.

are those rear wheel or flywheel dyno results? If that's rear wheel then your engine is up at S38B38 levels of horsepower and torque.

Unfortunatelly, it is not a dyno results.
It is a from an apps for iPhone. But this one is asking a lot of parameters and needs also the GPS to work ...
We have tested 4 cars :

- New 318D Belgian version : officially 136 HP, measured 143 (which is possible as standard 318D makes 143 hp)
- M3E30 with Shrick cams, known to produced arounds 230 CV, measured : 231 CV
- Porsche 928 GTS : Factory 320 HP, measured 277 hp :-(
- My M635csi.

Of course real dyno would be better.
I have a PROM modified that should give more torque with SP98 curves.

After I went to LeMans Classic, I have observed I need some rear headrest.
So I bought second hand headrest in Olive green.

I have painted the back cache in satin black. I won't touch the leather as the color is very close to my leather.

Otherwise, I still like a lot my M635CSI

Looking good as always.

Did u end up sorting the oil smoke on deceleration.

I'm probaby going to use an external oil/air seperator as when I rebuild the engine rpm redline will increase significantly the oil in the intake plenum.

No, I did not work on the smoke.
It has reduce. I guess, as the car was not used during few years the gasket were dry. I just used some product to reduce the smoke and it seems to work.
The motor only smoke now after acceleration to the maw rpm and sudden braking or release off the accelerator.
However, I am still wanting to see the modification you are talking about and I plan to replace the valve gasket anyway. But I think I will wait one year or two and rebuild the motor completely.

If you have a look at the last video I posted, you can see no smoke at all and I was pushing the car.

I did clean the roof. One of the previous pwner was a smoker. So it was yellowed.
I used MaFra Pulimax and I am glad of the result.
You just have to spray it and remove the dirt with a microfiber.

I might buy another bottle to have a second round.

Then I tried to clean my headlight.
I used deminiralized water and toothpasta. It worked well for the inside but the glass outside have to much impact. I will replace them.
So I demount the headlight from the frames and I have refurbished the frames.
Waiting for the new headlights.

Those dyno figures. Are they rear wheel or at the flywheel?

This apps was not installed on my phone.
I would say it corresponds to flywheels outputs. Otherwise it would have been as my car has been motortuned which is not the case.

We have measured also :

BMW 318D, 136HP : 143 HP
BMW M3E30 2.3 220 HP, camshift modified : 231 HP
Porsche 928 S4 320 HP : 277 HP

I do not know for the torque.
M3 and 318D are close to the known values (new car, estimated after modifications)

So an app and, at the flywheel.

A handy app to get however as it appears to give a good sound flywheel estimate.
