Sunroof woes...

Post by hlevenson » Sun Feb 20, 2011 3:15 pm

Anyone know the part numbers for the sunroof gasket/seals?

Had a moment of stupidity and drove without securing the sunroof. Lost it at 40mph. Not salvageable...

Found a matching one on FleaBay but needs new gasket. Can't figure out the right part numbers for the gasket.

Thanks for your help.

Try here:
http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1986/b ... _seal.html

I've heard that it might be two piece so I'd call before you place the order.

Do you have the links to the Parts Catalogs?

There are 3 Online Parts Catalogs:

RealOEM.com, the original and I still find it the fastest to navigate if you are still on dialup:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vi ... E24&arch=1

BMWFans, more graphic, so slower for dialup, but if you click on the part number in the right hand column, it will show you all of the other cars the part was used on. Very handy for hunting at the salvage yard:
http://bmwfans.info/original/E24/Cou/

Maximillian Importing, they will sell you the part, but the price isn't much better then the dealer:

The one piece seal (Ref #2) has been discontinued and replaced by the front seal (Ref #3 - $38 at Pelican) and rear seal (Ref #4 - $60 at Pelican). The front and rear have different profiles. They also come in different lengths, so you will need to measure for the length you need. They are actually listed for the 5 series at Pelican. So a search for "Sunroof Seal e24" a Pelican.

I was wondering about the one piece vs. the 2 piece.

Thanks for clearing that up Chris.

Cheers!

Hey, I'm just catching up as I am re-doing my sunroof panel.
So it looks like I need 2 pieces and over $100 for a gasket? Sheesh.

I just measured around my Sunroof and it was 94.5" all around. I can't find any listing of a seal of that length. The closest thing was 2370mm which is 93.3". So close but no cigar.

The others I have found were a front seal at 990mm or 39 inches + a rear seal at 1440mm or 57 inches. Together they would be 96 inches, which I guess is the way I'll have to go. I can't believe the prices for these seals.

If I have any of this wrong, someone please let me know before I toast over $100 on rubber pieces. Thanks.

BTW - if you followed my project, you'll see that I ultimately purchased 2 pieces to seal the sunroof. There was a front and rear seal. They are not cheap. I believe it was $44 for the front and $77 for the rear, but I needed it before last weekend since I was reassembling the roof. I had to pay expedited shipping and order from two different outfits who had it in stock. All up? $151. Dang that's a lot of money for rubber seals.

To be complete and share with the community, here are all the relevant details.

- Sunroof Seal measures 94.5” around the panel.

- Front Sunroof seal Genuine BMW Gasket 990mm (39 inches) - 54121870086 - $44.17, ordered from FCP Euro $60 with 2 day shipping for 8/31.https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?i ... 4121870086

- Rear Sunroof seal 1440mm (57 inches) rear seal 54121933203 - https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?i ... 4121933203
- Ordered from Pelican Parts $77.50, $94 for tax and delivery by 8/31.

I am about to get into this project on my car and wondering about all the pieces.
If i understand correct I need two pieces, the short one 990mm (54121870086) and the long one 1440mm (54121933203).
But what about the single one 2370mm (54121972055)? is it actually too short?
ECS Tuning lists them all for sale and available in 2 days. single piece would be cheapest at $80. the two piece option would be $114 (44+70)
car is 1985 US model
Thanks!

Don't know if this is too late, but the two pieces I got totaled more that 2370mm, but I did cut part of them. They are not the same cross-section either, so I don't think it would be the same. I believe I included pictures in my project thread. Mine is a 1984 633, but I would be surprised if you 635 is much different.
