Re: Spasso's Turbo Shark #0610023
Pretty much all work on all cars is on hold. The plan for this year is to complete the wiring, insulate and finish out the inside of my shop.
I'll probably do some minor upgrades to the Euro but that's about it.
My brother just bought an 84 633 with a rebuilt B35 in it so I will be helping him get that one squared away too.

Plan 'C'
Plan 'C'.
The Shop is on hold for now.
I am in the process of paying off the house year.
With that out of the way I'll have more money to play with on other projects.
Plus I have to do the driveline and thrust arms on the 530.
So much for making plans...

I just did thrust arms on the E39 540i. The sleeve came out with the knuckle finally after lots of pounding. I didn't think I would get it out but finally I did. Then separated the two on the bench and after reassembly it drives awesome!

Did the driveshaft this weekend.tschultz wrote:I just did thrust arms on the E39 540i. The sleeve came out with the knuckle finally after lots of pounding. I didn't think I would get it out but finally I did. Then separated the two on the bench and after reassembly it drives awesome!
A remanufactured/rebuildable unit from Beyerdriveline.com in Arizona.
The center U-joint is now replaceable.(Circlips)
Still have a little vibration going on back there. Not sure what to look at next.
Looking at the outboard end of the thrust arms.
It looks like the bottom of the strut restricts removal of the thrust arm without disassembly of the hub etc.
Your 540 is probably a bit different than mine. I have the lightweight rack and pinion front end

Thrust arms and lower control arms replaced.
New tires took care of the vibration. (I got 71k out of the old ones).

Re: Spasso's Turbo Shark #0610023
Got the house paid off last July and retired on March 1st of this year.
I'll be doing some work on the shop to make it more usable and then move on to some other projects,
1) Cleanup and repaint of 72 Chev 1-ton flat bed dump to sell.
2) Replace head gasket on the turbo car to correct oil leak between the head and block on the outboard side. (of course it drips directly on the turbo)
I will either sell the engine and part the car out or sell the entire car. The proceeds (or parts) will go to the '84 Euro I have.

Dana, Hey Congrats on the retirement and house payoff. Thats got to be a nice feeling. Glad to hear you are going to be getting back to working on your cars etc. I'll be watching your progress. Was it the driveshaft in the 530 or 635 you just did? Does Beyer Motor Works in Arizona supply BMW driveshafts? I don't see anything about that on the website.
530 Drive Shaft
Thanks for the congrats, 31 years is enough.
Driveshaft done on the 530. The rear CV boot was torn which I could have replaced myself but because it had at least 170k miles on it I decided to just replace the whole thing.
Beyerdriveline.com specializes in BMW drive shafts (not Beyer Motor Works, my mistake) and build with OEM U-joints using outside snap rings in lieu of staking.
They don't sell retail. They sell to commercial accounts and shops..
My nephew got mine for me through the shop he works for.

I hope you don't part it out!

Parting Out
I'm kind of up in the air about parting it out.
It's a good dry, rust free car but it needs everything, full suspension, steering and brakes for starters.
I will definitely pull the 3.25 LSD differential out of it for the 84 Euro car and may need the 5-speed bits for the conversion on the Euro car as well.
This car has perfect kidneys and surround that I could use too.

Google Beyer Motors Chandler AZ They are still in business and look at their website. They show a picture with a huge rack full of drive shafts. My car has one in it. I can't believe they won't sell one retail as they primarily are a retail repair shop.
