Looks like some good progress going on.

What engine are u running ?

I would love to do a e24 but I had donated 2x e28's to make one good car. Have a late 87 with the strong body and a trashed m535i.

Hi Guys
I think I am going to go Triples with big ass trumpets
Because the motor is a High Comression English Import as the car is it is perfect. Looking at what type of throttle body to use. Any ideas would be great.

Sounds good. With the trumpets u need to tune them to the rev range u want. No point having short trumpets with low rpm. It's still worth having a plenum even on carbs to make power or at the very least run an effective heat shield
Are u rebuilding engine if so take advantage of e85 and give it 14:1 comp. u would only need it I spin to 7500-8000 max to
Make really good power (well over 300bhp). As an alternative Paul Burke makes some nice adaptor for s38 throttle bodies for the m30

Plus all the outer holes are being filled and the rear head rest metal plates and rear seat holders are out.
Tomorrow the new floor goes in and the New Fritz Bitz Headers are being fitted.
I am also fitting the new custom exhaust with right hand side pipe outlet instead of coming out the rear.
Removing the sound proofing is a real pain in the bum
Things to do Tomorrow
Air Conditioner condenser Coming Out
Air compressor Coming out
Fuel Tank Coming Out
Auto Box Going
All Auto related stuff going =D>
Auto Shifter unit GONE =D>
Auto Pedal Box gone

looks fantastic. Probably does need longer bellmouths though.

Now; tell me about the exhaust manifold!

We all want one of these!

Love the track car project BTW....

cheers

75mm long? That's the longest I've been able to find on Ebay.

Carbs are not the same as injection systems (especially with big cams fitted) but the total inlet length is very important. The total length is quite short as it stands on that engine. The thought used to be that a short tract gave the best top end power but longer could give midrange gains.

However recently built race engines that I have seen (done at vast expense with lots of dyno work) have (even with a 7000rpm redline) gravitated towards much longer bellmouths. In fact one builder said (and this is with a slant-block BMW lump like ours, so he wasn't exactly short of room under the bonnet) that he would have fitted longer bellmouths but he ran out of space. He got more power (everywhere) with every length increase until he couldn't go longer. They were 18" long or something.

So anyway, I'd suggest that you try a few different lengths and see how you get on. I'd also suggest that fitting a plenum might be worth a go too.

Some ideas to kick around here;

True about injection vs carbs, but as to what length "ram tubes" to use, think of it like this: BMW made those massive curved intake manifolds for a reason, and it wasn't to fill engine compartment space. Take a tape measure and figure roughly what the runner lengths are on a stock manifold. That should put you in the ballpark on the tubes, less the throat length of the carbs.

Super interesting project!

Not wanting to hijack my good friend from Queensland's thread, so quickly, dyno'ing in the next 4 weeks so will buy a 75mm long set and dyno with stock and then longer length. Let's see what happens.

Oh, will it fit, that floor pan? Yep, I know you measure three times and cut once!

Question Guys
I have been trying to save money by doing the soundproof removal my self.
Now does anyone have any tips on doing this to get the best finish for painting please.
Any tips would be great.

Bmw 6 series by jeremy walton is a fantastic book to get a good dose of race history. I take some pictures of the pages if you want.

I know they got the weight down to 2800 lbs. Thats impressive.
Karmann, German for extra rusty.

Addam a chap in Sydney who makes some fancy throttle bodies for m20 just finished a very high comp 3.7 ltr m30 whit s38 throttle bodies etc. His 2.9ltr m20 made 293rwhp so the early estimate for the m30 would be somewhere 350-370 rwhp with 8000rpm so should make over 400hp at flywheel without a dirty carb to be seem.

Big Week with lots of work done.
The car will be undercoated and sprayed in 2 pac this week.
I had my friend Rod and myself spending hours sanding to get the side of the car looking like it should never have had side bump stripes there.
Every bit of rust has gone and all inside angles are now right and ready for painting.
I have now 200 plus hours just in the body work so I hope the end result will be good.
Thursday she is booked into the spray booth for the finish paint.
