UK rhd 635CSi Turbo conversion by AVA Turbos, Glasgow.

Post by Pod »

I purchased this car in January 2013 from Boyd in Glasgow who has been kindly storing it for me. It arrived here last Saturday, so I thought I should start a thread to record its restoration.

I know that Boyd posted a couple of times regarding this car, but received little response. I'm hoping that some of you guys will be able to provide me with more information [-o<

To date, I have found out that the car (#8175126) was manufactured in November 1982 and registered in the UK on 13/12/82. Strangely, the log book states that it was previously registered/used overseas? I am the ninth keeper. I understand that the turbo conversion was carried out by AVA Turbos in Glasgow in about 1986 and was one of only two E24s that received this treatment by that company. So its a very rare car - possibly the only one of its kind still in existence? Although it is painted Alpine White, I need to decide whether to keep it in the original colour or repaint it in (my preferred) Zinnoberrot when the time comes.

The period 8Jx16 Compomotive split rims look great. I'll have to try to find out if they were fitted at the same time the engine conversion was done.

I have not had much time to check the car over apart from fitting replacement rear side windows to keep the elements out. I will be posting that operation in the technical guide for reference, as I was very surprised to note that nobody has recorded that yet.

I will post here occasionally as the restoration progresses, however I have a feeling it will take some time! Here are some pictures.

Pod - Good luck with the resto. RHD delivered new to the UK, but now with a MPH speedo?! Exported and federalized at one time? What's up with that? Keep us posted on your progress.

I guessed that the wheels were fitted at the same time. There are photos of their M535i turbo demonstrator with those wheels on it.

I'd love to know how they did this exactly.

Where is the AFM? (is there one any more..?)

Is there a new ECU or just a chip?

What is the thing that looks like a vacuum brake servo by the induction pipe?

Is there an intercooler? If not are you going to install one?

What injectors/FPR is it running?

I'm guessing the car doesn't have AC fitted, right?

How much boost/how many bhps were claimed?

It looks like a very interesting project... but presumably it has all the 'issues' of any other neglected 6er plus a load more things to worry about, right...?

do keep us posted...

cheers

sounds like it has a hard time running....timing probably way off...unless every piece of 745i was transfered in there...without proper tune...that one drive would cause internal damage if......one thing i'd never do is rev a turbo engine without a proper tune...good luck guys.

dyno video please...
