85 euro m635csi & m88/3 timing chain - my project
I picked up this 85 euro M635csi.
I've owned a 85 535i e28 but not an e24 and not one with the M88 engine. I took a gamble but we'll see.
I haven't found any rust in the usual spots and I was able to drive her home.
Anyone have a suggestion on where to start with a M6 --
the suspension is similar to the e28 but....
I'm thinking lots of reading.... Clean it, damn its dirty, then fluids, belts, plugs, gas, brakes, electrical, suspension, interior, exterior, etc...
Really don't have a history on the car. Looks like it was a Georgia car and was sold to Frosty and he moved it to St. Louis area around 04, but I really don't know.

Your list seems good to me.
Some additional thoughts;
1) suspension; check and replace your bump stops (external at the rear, internal to the insert itself at the front.
2) suspension; if your damping isn't good enough after you have done the bumpstops, replace or rebuild yer billies. (and if you still don't like it after that, get some different ARBs (sway bars)).
3) cam chain. If in doubt replace it and the guides. This will be $$$$ but a bunch less than any kind of camchain breakage, and they do break, oh yes...
4) balance the TBs, clean the injectors; revel in the crispness...
5) there is loads more power in the motor... you could try letting some of it out....?

and adding I what Brucey said these are the most improvements of least money spent that I have seen with upgrading the m635
1/ strut brace - massive improvement to steering and front end grip.
2/ steering bracket fix - removed most of the free play in the steering.
3/ installing rear e34 540i rear brakes with braided hoses - I have more stopping power than most modern "performace cars".
One if the relatively big ticket items I done was refresh the fuel system totally.
This involved replacing both fuel pumps, injectors, regulator, filter, and a section of fuel line that was nearly folded flat, with a small adjustment computer to alter the fuel signal. I haven't dyno's it yet but I wouldn't r surprised if I haven't picked up at least 30kw in parts if the rev range and economy has improved dramatically from an average if about 350km per tank to around 500km in urban driving.
Another big ticket expensive item I have done was replace the std gearbox for a dogleg with 1:1 5th and a slighly lower final drive to 3.46:1. This mod is not for everyone but the dogleg box is very fast shifting box. 1st is about where it was before but 2-5th are all very tightly spaced so its easy to keep the engine on the boil when driving hard

AFM part number
As you can see my AFMis missing its cap, any idea how to tell a AFM part number without the CAP?
Should be a 0280203025 but the previous owned was messing with the AFMs

No idea to tell which one it is.
Any cap will fit on it.
Perhaps do a voltage check on it to see if the voltage change is linear.
There is quite abit u can do in tuning the m635 but get the basics done first then we will school you on it.

So, I was told and read that the weak point on a M88 is the Chain.

If there is no history on the chain being done its good protection for your investment. The hub is a good thing to do and it allows in the future to rev it up to 7500 instead if the lowish 6900 factory cutout.

I would not recommend modifying an M30 hub. This is a known weak point on these engines and the failure mode can be a broken crankshaft. Do your own risk assessment on saving $300 now compared to rebuilding an engine including replacing the crankshaft. The wall thickness of the hub is too small, over time and under the tension applied by the nut the hub goes barrel shaped and becomes shorter. This then reduces the tension applied by the nut and allows the hub to vibrate on the end of the crankshaft.
I think the best result is to spring for the Frank Faye hub, he is a great guy to deal with.

I am making my own crank hub in the next two weeks. It is identical to the original except it will be made from 4041 tool steel and rockwell at 39 on the C scale. Why would my m88 not have the snake euro header on it?

If you are going through the effort to do things right, then change over to some Evans Waterless Coolant. It is without question one of the best and simplest upgrades you could make.
Also replace your intake throttle body boots with silicone reducers.
My guess is that someone scavenged the headers off yours.

m635
Looks to be a latter US S38 exhaust manifold, think the old euro header cracked and they replaced it with a US version? And a leaky valve cover.

SPROCKET EXHAUST 1 11311305394 NLA it has been superseded by dual chain sprocket.. 11311311816
That won't work.
Would anyone recommend just doing the guides and not the sprockets? Or just the intake and crank sprocket?
New intake on left, BMWs replacement exhaust sprocket on the right......

You can modify to accept the dual chain. In fact, it's highly recommended.
