downshifting 635csi to 630gte

Post by opinions »

I have owned mk1 golf with 16v turbo engine for about seven years now, and somehow that project just got stuck. So much to do to get it betternbetter, but not enough motivation to build, but still at the sametime such big need to do something new.
So, over 500hp car with fwd is seen, builded three years friends quattro audi, owned few evo mitsus so theres "nothing new" in awd section, rwd! Yes thats the thing, never had any.
Searched long time proper m3s, but as e46 are way too expensive and bit dull and the e36 is just uggly, and law forbids any tune up to engine here in Finland. Mk4 supra, soooo much potential in the 2jz and quite good looking car, but cant afford that either.

Then one rainy day i was heading to work and there was same time at the traffic lights a e24 and i was thinking that same thing that 20 yrs ago when i saw 635csi, some day i want one of those. Searched car sales pages at internet and realized that i could possibly afford it.
Discovered one, freshly painted, interior done with alcantara etc. Called from it and bought it.

Drove it few weeks at fall and even though i was happy that i bought it, i was still thinking that potential of supras engine..
Then came the winter and time in garage.

Bought cheap toyota aristo, whichs has same engine than supra. 6spd manual gearbox gs6-53dz, holset turbo and lots of parts to get the engine in the car

Wow, hell of a project. Doesn't make sense on some levels (swapping one straight six for another), but then swaps rarely do "make sense".

Looks from pics like you're not the first one to do it, too. (That same swap in a red 6er?)

Engine and intake/exhaust manifolds fit in the bay pretty nicely!

Why did you elect to cut through the radiator support though? Created a lot of work for yourself tie-ing the front end all back together structurally, no?

Yeah, there are few that i know that have swapped the toyota engine too.
2jz can easily handle 600whp with stock internals, thats why :)

Cutting the front end in pieces makes the engine and transmission assembling for about 115% easier. And fitting the radiator ,fans and aircon condenser with oil cooler and intercooler even possible..
Few bolt attached reinforcement pipes and the face is even stiffer than stock ( which is not much, though...)

Thought that must let brains rest one day for making all electrics to engine and tried to make some decorations.
Friend of mine made drawings to cnc and another friend made the billet cover for vag cop.

Nice shiny bit, that made do some silly things. Bigger ventilation holes (lots of welding and grinding and swearing and bit more welding and grinding...)

Tried to get it running today, but when i was filling the gas tank and adjusting fuelpressure found few leaking joints less than 3bar pressure. Those steel braided teflon hoses should be capable to handle over 300bar pressures. Very weird though..

Fuel pumps are located to sparetyres hole and it is upholstered with some cloth. it is, as you can imagine totally ruined. I was so pissed of about that that i didnt take any pics.
Well, tomorrow (today) is a new day to take it running without any leaks..

Why not more photos?

Your dropbox links are no longer valid. The car looked like a great starting point, but I will admit that seeing such a nice car go under the knife for anything other than a BMW engine makes me feel bad.

I agree. I had the choice of an LS3 6 speed conversion for $12k or, a fully rebuilt zero mile S38B38 for $11k landed from Iceland. Chose the later. Car ready to pick up. Here's what a BMW transplant can do (see below). Expecting, with the Landzer high performance chip, 325RWHP. Will dyno.
