Hehe, thanks Shipper. Getting to the stage now where I have almost all parts required for this conversion. Problem is that my BMW mechanic is flat out at the moment and the hoists are full. It will be a few weeks yet.

In other news, the new original Hella headlights arrived yesterday. Fitted them up with Narva H1 +100s and protection film from Mr Fixit. Tested the left side tonight and they are probably twice as bright as the worn originals still in the right side.

I also gave her a rub a dub dub with Poorboys professional polish and sealant. Great stuff that !! Filled in those swirls nicely.

You guys think it would benefit from a silver pin stripe ?

You know, you can still call him Locutus ya know.
I love that name and yes, you could use a silver euro stripe.
Bert Poliakos or whatever prolly has what you need.

Yeah I know, but how do I explain to Vinney about the gender change. Was a "he" now a "she". All my cars are "she", especially the older ones with a bad temperament and saggy bits :D

Contacted Bert but I think I might get a professional here to install a pin stripe instead of myself. The Euro pin stripe, that's the thin twin one yes ? The one Bert has is the wider (and wider spaced) variety. I think I prefer the thin one on this car............errr.........LOCUTUS.

Pin stripe is really an individual choice.

Some like me like the clean look, others dig the pin stripe.

You don't need to, he is smart enough to read it for himself

Although Patrick Stewart played LOCUTUS of Borg, the literal latin translation for LOCUTUS is basically"one who speaks for / represents" so technically it is neither male nor female.

As a final point, you are now the custodian of the car and it is totally your choice what you call it and what choice of sex you wish to give it. You're right some women can be cantankerous.

Cheers Vinny

This break I concentrated on installing an upgraded sound system. The existing speakers were good enough, but I needed some amplification and bass. Purchased two amps, a 500w rms monobloc Pioneer to drive a 500w rms Alipne subwoofer. The second (silver) amp drives the rear 6 x 9 speakers. The head unit is a Pioneer DEH PRS-80 with low level outputs to both amps and driving the front 4 x 6 speakers. Bit of a bitch fitting it all in the BMW dash, but got there eventually. The head unit has a great feature. You can custom select colours for the display. Thus I could match very closely the OBC colour.

I've also completed moving the battery to the boot, in preparation for installing the S38B36. Ran 32mm2 positive encased in ribbed conduit via the interior to the starter motor, and a 35mm2 negative via external following roughly the brake lines. This is terminated on the engine block. Possibly not necessary to do this but played it safe. Created a bolt stud in the boot bulkhead for an additional grounding point. I used the existing battery positive to starter cable to link up with the relays up front and the negative to negative for relays and to the guard ground. It all works great !

Starting the clean up of the S38B36, *woooot* !! Today I dismantled the alternator from this engine. Just as well I did as it needs some work. The brushes are shot and I will have to get some lathe time at BM Autohaus to skim the rotor slip rings. Have ordered a new voltage regulator with brushes from RM European.

Will the stock alternator be enough to power the sound system. Electronics are not my forte.

Yah Ken no problems there. Currently running off the stock 90 amp E24 alternator. The S38B36 alternator is 140 amps, so ample head room.

Thanks Mike !

Today I repaired my glove box torch as the new batteries and LED globe had arrived. Soldering the tabs on the battery was difficult, but some roughing up with emery and extra flux finally got it. Easily 3 times as bright as normal globe.

There seems a different form of alcohol for every task.

Coming together nicely.

I have a similar subwoofer setup, and it sucks not having the boot space. You have to have the thing cranked up so high to here it through the rear seat bulkhead. I may put a couple of small ones under the front seats or in the space under the rear seats if there is any usable space there. My old under seat one got stolen some time back but I had to modify it to fit it there

Hey Gaz. See my other thread, subby is now mounted in the rear bulkhead for much improved bass clarity.

I finally have some time to devote to the engine conversion project. Started the clean up process of the S38B36. Replaced the water pump and crank sensor, and have removed the cam cover for strip and paint. One detail I had not spotted before is that the previous owner of the engine must have run wasted spark coil as there is a strange adapter on the distributor drive, obviously to mount up a cam angle sensor. You can see the hole for the sensor below. I'm going to stick with OEM dizzy for now, so have had to order the correct adapter plate. Top of the engine looks good, as you would expect with just over 60k kms. BM Autohaus hopefully will have some hoist time soon, but it's been a long haul !

Small update. I got sick of repairing the damn door locks so have installed a Mongoose MCL2000 remote system. Wired it into the boot lock motor location as all the correct wiring is present (lock, unlock, right and left turn signal for flasher) and it is an easy location to get to. Ran a hot positive from the radio antenna 12v. Will post some pictures later including wiring diagram for future reference.

Here's a couple of simple wiring diagrams. Colours are for the Mongoose system, but wire functions are the same on just about any unit. I made a ground point on the boot lock mounting plate and as stated, hot always positive I ran from the power antenna.
