Took a couple of weeks but swapped out the belts and did a bit fixing up in some areas.

The adjusting bar and nut on the alternator had a couple teeth stripped off so had to order some new ones, managed to get correct length belts for the alternator(13x1040) and ac(13x920) but the power steering(10x913) needs to be slightly smaller, ideally a (10x900)

Need to check compression on the engine and sort out a leak it's either the rear main seal or the small cover behind the valve cover which I've already replaced.

Image

Glad to have found the metal tab to mount the manual shifter already on the transmission tunnel, so tomorrow we'll run a compression test and if we need to open up the engine will probably build it up to handle boosting as i definitely want to drop a turbo on it down the line

Have a good look at the oil pressure sender on the upper rear of the engine. I had a leak on the 633 which by all appearances was a rear main seal. We had it up on the rack, preparing to pull the transmission, when one eagle-eyed club member saw the oil was coming from atop the bellhousing. Changed the oil pressure sender and the leak was gone. Even though the old sender was bleeding oil at a pretty significant rate, it still worked.

Thanks, will be sure to check that out. I wanted to run the engine while on the lifter to see if we could spot it.

What's the P/N of the alternator bracket? I have the skinny thing for an 84 633 and I would like to upgrade along with the bushings.

The adjusting bar p/n is (12 31 1 714 922)

Image

Also found the leak, when I replaced the rear gasket #10 I had to do some fiddling around so the gasket might have slipped while installing the cover, might replace it this coming week or when i get all the rubbers for the intake replaced.

Till next week she's going to have to sit tight

Hello ken. Please update the board on this upgrade. I'm under the impression that the large aluminum bracket (#1) also needs to be replaced but I don't have direct experience with it. I would like to know for sure how it is done.

Do you guys mean this when referring to the skinny bracket?

On realOEM the #1 bracket is showing as NLA but through the BMW ETK it's still available or has been superseded.

If someone can post a vin I can check through the etk or you can youreslves here: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/access ... logue.html

If you need any photos or close ups of the alternator or bracket on the vehicle I can do that

Something very similar but with the teeth for adjustment. The improved adjustment bracket was introduced in 87 and the fuzzy info I have is that the large Aluminum bracket needs to be drilled through where the adjustment bracket mounts.

You posted a great pic of the adjustment bracket already. That pic is what is leading to this discussion so thanks for that. Sorry to sidetrack your thread.

No need to apologize, haha I'm glad if something remotely beneficial comes out of my thread.

Parts seem to be available on bmw south atlanta website so at least they aren't NLA

Des,
I'm going to look at my car this weekend as the skinny bracket doesn't seem to apply to my VIN 6997510, but the two sided, toothed bracket 12311274747 (Adjustment bar) is the applicable part. I'm now looking at a cell phone pic I took last week and it is a skinny toothed bar. Someone I recall a long time ago said the upgrade is an E34 part #12311714450. So I'll do some digging and report back. Realoem doesn't show a picture.
By the way, looking at your pic, your bracket does not appear to have the toothed or geared sides although you have the toothed nut. Could it be a hybrid (polite name for bastardized) configuration?

You can see from my attached pics that (1) I need to replace the bushings (2) replace the ground strap - but I'll bet the small bolts are frozen in place (3) beef up the alternator bracket to get a better alignment of the belt (4) somehow change that short fat bypass hose to give me a touch more clearance from the water pump fan belt pully.

While they are hard to see, you can see my OEM setup.

The angle of the photo wasn't all that good to show the bracket. I'll get a close up when I'm by it tomorrow. The bracket has teeth along the top edge only in the second picture of the bracket you can barely make it out.

Here's off the etk

That adjustment bolt is supposed to ride inside the teeth and by cranking on the bolt head, you move the alternator in or out. But the darn metal is quite soft so I use my long screwdriver to help things along.

Got a close up of the adjusting bar
Image

This is the best I could get to show the large #1 bracket, it bolts up right below the water pump
Image

Also I removed the rear cover and gasket since i was already here and tomorrow we'll see if we're able to make our own gasket

Took an hour to make up this gasket
Image

Bolted on the afm and intake, started her up and got slight smoking after 40 secs of idling. Cover looks dry from underneath so could be old oil burning. I'll remove the heat shield tomorrow clean up the oil off the exhaust give her a second try. Another possible location could be the head gasket as when I picked her up she was overheating. We'll check compression before starting her up again and if anything's off we'll pull out the engine and replace all the gaskets and rings etc

The oil leak seems to be sorted, now I just need to replace the washers on the power steering lines to stop that from leaking and we also found one of the vent lines from the charcoal canister leaking so we plugged it up and will get some new pipes on Saturday. Once that's done need to fill up the tank and give her a good run as the spark plugs had a lot of carbon deposits.

Good news is she passed the compression test with flying colours all cylinders A-ok.
This was on a cold engine:

And she runs again, leak free.

We re-adjusted the afm again after all the leaks and vacuum leaks are sorted and got engine running great, not running rich anymore the idle isn't surging, runs and accelerates without any hesistation. When i swapped over the 179 ecu there's hesitation during heavy acceleration and power feels restricted. I had the 179 ecu bolted and the 150 ecu (m1.1) in the glove box and switched between them. Drove both through slow speed traffic in auto and manual, normal acceleration and pedal to the floor accelerations. Throughout all the 150 responded much better so I don't know if the afm has to be re-adjusted as the ecu is different but will run on the old one and keep the 179 for the maf swap

Currently have the intake manifold off and soaking in petrol over the weekend to clean out all the grime and dirt inside. Hopefully we should have everything bolted back up this coming week.

Those front joints reminds me of greasing the birfield joint on the 80 series Landcruisers. Messy job but not all that difficult and satisfying when done. Does BMW call for a Molybdenum grease on these?

I ordered the boot kit off pelican parts and it came with this: "Swepco CV Joint Grease, enough for four joints, 14.4 oz"

Which is labeled as 101 moly grease

MSGGrunt this is what was supplied with the kit

Image

Need to really clean her up, cleaned up the worst grime by brushing petrol on it and wiping off with paper towels. Once she runs again probably better to spray some degreaser and get a steam wash.

Image

Same time we'll replace all the rubber pipes for the intake and some cracked vent lines.

Image

Came in to flip the intake over I'm hoping all the crap in there is out by tomorrow. It's one pita to remove and putting it back on is probably going to be a nightmare

Back on the road again. Will take a long test drive on Thursday. We're suspecting the tps might not be working properly so I'll try find a used one to test if this one's good or not.

Did a 240km round trip today and went through some twisty mountain roads. She handled beautifully and the power was all there it got a little sketchy on the patches of uneven road on the long straights as I've only got one working shock. Fueled up before the 120km stretch back and used up around 15L of petrol (not quite sure how accurate the gas gauge is though)

Once back started leaking out her coolant so that's going to be next weeks adventure.

Haha thanks, half the fun is in fixing it up, or at least that's what I tell myself.

But man after the drive through the mountains I can't wait to do the manual swap. That'll be driving heaven.
