Yep, seen that episode, luckily as I am removing the engine anyway for a refresh, taking bits off was not counter productive.

I wish I had a nice ramp

A nice ramp would be great. Maybe something like a kwik-lift. It's just an awful lot to spend for what you get.

I use an HF jack with the crossmember adapter to lift the front end by the fangs. It works really well to get the car high up and onto a set stands. Then I lift the rear by the differential and lower onto a second set of stands. The whole underside is accessible then.

Left hand rear jacking point area has some rot which is being cut away and replaced with new metal once fabrication is completed from templates created.

You will notice where water (I assume) has collected within the car where the rear subframe connects to the chassis which has caused some rot to the outer skin.

Right hand side all looks fine so just the one side to sort out ... nice.

That subframe mount and gusset area is actually quite complex under the surface.
Make sure that whoever does the repair retains the holes with plastic plugs that are visible in your photo to allow you to flood the internals with rustproofer once all is good again.
Those access holes are the only way into that cavity which is blocked off from the outer sill area by the central membrane/structure .
When I opened mine up to repair and rebuild it there was no rustproofing agent in it at all and would have been from factory.
I also drilled down through two of the three layers of sheet metal around the subframe mount under the rear seats to allow waxoyl to be pumped into the surrounding area of the splined bolt shank.

Don,

I do have a cunning plan (now where does that line come from), as this M6 comes with the M-Tech bodykit which will go back on, I intend to add some additional small plug holes for the sill (which will be hidden by the bodykit) so I can easily inject lovely amounts of waxoil into all the cavities, I will probably think about adding some extra plug holes around where the new metal is to be patched, infact readying your post again it looks like you have already done this.

Lots of respect for someone who is willing and able to go through the lengths you are pursuing. Also, that M3 was ridiculously clean!

...funny you should say that, I saw a white E36 M3 parked up at my wife's workplace yesterday. Rusty around the rear arches and a bit scabby on the doors, but deeply desirable!

I've never driven one though.

OK, been a while since posting any progress.

Well, I have been removing all the wax oil and underseal that has been liberally applied to all the chassis areas under the car, for the last 30 years.

Not the nicest of jobs but there you go, a heat gun and good solvent seems to do the trick.

So far the manufacturers underseal is all in very good shape with only specific areas where it needed to be removed to be able to tackle surface rust and a couple of patches of rot (so far).

Once done I will post pics to show the result of what the underseal has been hiding.

Its been a while but managed to get some more work done this weekend.
Was expecting to pull the engine before crimble but will have to wait till the new year.

Instead, have completed removing all the underseal etc., and remove manufacturers underseal where necessary in order to do rust repairs.

Luckily the Sills in general are in very good order with only surface rust to contend with, except for the End Sill which need more metal work.

Pics should tell the story.

... and finally.

will post better pics of the front end once I know what I am dealing with but all looks good so far, even the jacking points are much better than first thought.

There is some rot in the RH chassis rail that will need to be addressed.

Suspension - already thinking about it.

Now, there is nothing really wrong with the current springs and shocks but general age of the components etc has me considering a setup as previsouly done on my E30 M3:

H & R Spring and Bilstien B8 damper setup.

I have not done a comprehensive search but so far only Turner Motorsport in the USA seem to supply this as a package.

Turner Motorsport also have other components that is floating my boat suspension wise.

Any thoughts? I guess I should review and discuss on the Suspension, Steering, Brakes forum?

Have already ordered a rath of items from BMW today (fuel lines, brake lines, bushes, clips, hoses, etc) to begin with.

My thoughts...

I had H&Rs with Bilstein B8s on the rear, B6 on the front, but regardless, I really did not like them.

Unless things have changed, they are the same part as the E28 and I suspect they were developed for the 5er, with its very different weight distribution.

I hated them, removed them after a couple of weeks and sold them to an E28 owner!

New standard kit from Walloth and Nesch for shocks. My M is in for paint 28th Jan...you might be able to do a comparison with new shocks soon!

Cheers,

Rob

Mmm, interesting, on the E30 this setup worked wonderfully in both the handling and ride department.

Saying that, your point is well justified if the same setup is specific for the E28 but will also fit the E24 just by design.

Like I said, the current suspension is actually fine from what I remembered.

This was always going to be an issue (for me anyway), do I keep it original or do I upgrade assuming technology has come on since the original M-Tech setup.

The other point to mention, the car will probably travel on both 17s and 16s wheels/tyres. The 17s will look much better (BBS RCs) but the 16s will be better for everything else.

Picked up various parts from BMW today - fuel lines, brake lines, clips, bushes, hoses, chassis plates, etc. Oh and they gave me some free anti-freeze usually £20.00 worth - they must have really felt sorry for me.

Oh and another thing, got some 10w/40 engine oil from Euro Car Parts but did not realise they were having a Christmas Special Offer so only cost me £8.00 for 5 litres (usually £20.00 for 5 litres).

Free antifreeze from BMW and half price engine oil - maybe Christmas is not all that bad afterall

All areas (inner sill, etc) exposed prior to adding new metal was cleaned, treated and painted with rust encapsulator, and finally dinitrol wax oil was applied.
