Spasso's '84 Euro 635, #8183039

Post by Spasso »

One of those deals a guy can't pass up. These things are hard to find!
Good deals can be had during the holidays.

Really hard to find E28 based Euro 635csi. 1984 grey market.
(The one with the black wheels to the left of 0610023 Turbo car).

All trim straight and present
Euro engine, higher compression. It runs really well/ pulls hard.
Rare interior colors. "Taurusrot" ,Bull Red (Red Bull?) and black.
Crack free dash.
New Windshield.
Sport seats.
Rear Seat Headrests.
Auto trans with sport setting.
New 80 amp alternator .
New Mass Air Flow Meter.
Full set of original metric alloy wheels with almost new TRX tires.

Nearly all parts required to convert this car to a 5-speed included..
- 5-speed transmission.
- Flywheel and clutch.
- Pedal assy
- Shifter
- Drive line

Boxes of extra interior and dash parts..

* Best of all, it's running a straight pipe and sounds really great.

With that said, it needs stuff.
Some minor dings and chips here and there but no rust or cancer.
Valve adjustment needed and it has an oil leak.
Brake accumulator is bad and it needs axle boots.
Pressure washing imminent.

Delicious!

Looks like it has great potential! Nice find as it has euro headrests, a sweet color combo, rear headrests, and the body looks quite straight. I'm sure this will clean up nicely!

It has it's warts but considering the rarity and condition, well worth it.
I wanted to start pressure washing today but it's freezing out there. The grease doesn't like to come off very well, even with Simple Green.
I may have to set up the space heater.

Imagine that!
The bottom of my driver's seat needs some help but with conditioning the rest should hold up pretty well.

Where ever this car came from the climate was kind to it. (like the Pacific Northwest).
All of the bulb seals are in nice shape.
All windows go up and down, the fronts very fast.
What blew me away was that the sunroof worked.

The frame is is straight although, shows some bottoming on one rail.
Body gaps are consistent.
The car sits level.
The bottom of the oil pan looks like it got nailed with a giant belt sander running 10 grit paper. No cracks though.
I will be buying a skid plate in the future.

I need to have one bolster repaired on the drivers seat base because of a small puncture and the piping is loose in the drivers seat-back bolster.
Ideally, when these are repaired I would strip and redye the front seats with Leatherique products. I can send them a swatch from a hidden section of leather and they can color match.
I have had pretty good success with them on other cars.

To get it completely right the rear seats should be done at the same time so they all look equally fresh.

The temps got high enough (40f) to go ahead and pressure wash.
First thing I did was empty the trunk of all the 5-speed conversion parts and wash the alloy wheels.
I cleaned up the driveline and put it away.
Then the wheel wells and springs, and lastly, the engine bay after soaking overnight in Simple Green.
(Yes, the strut brace is rusty).

Once done I put the car up on the lift and shot the bottom of the engine and suspension with more Simple Green.
Pressure wash tomorrow.
If I am energetic enough I'll pressure wash the 5-speed, clutch, flywheel , shifter and assorted brackets etc....

I might even pull those 14" steelies off and see how my Rondell 58's fit.

OH, Man!!
Other than black, Taurusrot is my fav color! Very rare E28 Euro on top of that? You did good! =D>
You might even be able to bring back the color? Interesting how people forget to feed the leather.
Clean dash too! I smell a 5spd conversion coming very soon. 8-[

Thanks,
I was just getting ready to do the suspension and steering on the Turbo car when this popped up on Craigslist.
I watched it for about a week debating on whether I should call, afraid of the too-many-irons-in-the-fire syndrome.
Then he dropped the price 500.00 and I thought, it's Christmas and he must not be getting any calls on it.
These don't come around..............EVER.
I had to take the plunge.

Three hours of pressure washing the underside today in 34 degree weather.
Some of the grease in the rear half was like concrete, probably original since '84.
It's nice to have it all cleaned up. Easier to inspect.

The rear inboard axle boots are done, the outboards soon to follow.
Left rear sway bar link completely missing.
Rear rotors look tired, fronts are new, with new pads.
New radiator.
Differential mount in good shape with solid metal all over.
No rust or cancer that I can find anywhere. That's got to be worth something.

The car sits on aftermarket springs, Grey in color. Ring a bell with anyone?
Bilstein struts and shocks.

Nice. Nice. Nice.

What a score!! =D> I cruise CL in different areas and saw that one near Seattle a couple of weeks ago. Quite a few good cars going up for sale in that area. Had one follow me home.

Grey was usually ST suspension parts.

Hi Ralph,
What followed you home? :D

Thanks for the heads-up on the springs. It looks like these drop about 1.5 inches. (in the front at least).
I'll have to go to their website and see if I can find some specs.
Edit: I went to the ST site and they didn't seem to have any springs for 635's (US spec included) there, unless I'm missing something.

I believe ST used to have E24/28 springs, but discontinued them. Low demand, no doubt.

The underneath looks very clean, infact super clean.
Are there any obvious issues rust wise - after pressure washing the grime away?

Lovely combination of exterior colour and red leather interior.

No rust, salt corrosion or cancer in any of the sheet metal. No bubbles in the paint.
A slight amount of surface rust in the bottom of the spare tire compartment but none in the jack well.
Same story with my turbo car. All dry, no rust.

I would rather deal with any number of other problems than deal with cancer on a car.

I learned a long time ago that when you see a couple of bubbles in the paint to multiply by 10 for a better picture, and then RUN! :(

It's amazing how long it takes to properly mount US spec license plates on a Euro car.

I bought a "universal" plate bracket for the rear but had to re-slot the holes in the bracket to match the Euro attach points on the car so it would fit in the recess evenly.
I had to trim 1/4" off the top and bottom of the bracket and then bevel the edges.
The bracket is spaced out from the back of the car with thick rubber donuts so I could fit the plate around the truck release housing a little easier..

I go to test fit the plate on the bracket and the holes on the bracket don't line up with the plate.
NOTE: This is a bracket designed for US spec plates and the holes for the plate don't line up. They were all off about 3/16" to an 1/8".
I had to float the plate and split the difference on all four holes and then elongate the holes in the plate to match.

I had to notch the top of the plate to fit around the trunk release button and housing.
I also had to trim 1/4" off the top and bottom of the plate, being careful to retain all of the graphics.
All corners radiused and deburred to make it look as original as possible.
Compare with the rear plate shown in the pictures at the top of this thread. I don't know how the P.O. got away with it.
The plate is mounted with stainless screws and washers. Now on to the front.

Edit: I decided to add some German plates for flavor.

The original brackets were still on the front bumper so I made an aluminum spreader contoured to the curvature of the bumper.
A little juggling and drilling and the plate bolted on with more stainless screws with nylok nuts. Much easier this go around.
I'll paint the aluminum support black when it gets warmer out.
Right now it's 22 degrees out. Glad I got my pressure washing done yesterday when it was "warm".

Edit: I decided to add a German plate to the front and leave the US plate off for now.
If seen in the rear view mirror it will say, "MOVE IT".

It's been colder here this week, I lose motivation in this cold weather!

I folded the bottom edge of my license plate to fit within the euro opening. I also mounted with a single screw through the letter Z since the plate is practically wdged in place otherwise:

Oh yeah, and I cut out the trunk lock shape from the top.

A Redheaded stepchild. Kastanienrot e12 5-speed. She's purty though!

ST had more success with the sway bars so the springs were not common.

Strange how the dirt (soil) composition up there actually protects the cars from rust. The dirt stays dry and "shields" the sheet metal from moisture!! I couldn't believe it!! PITA to clean off as well.

Love the wheels in that picture. They fit the character of the car perfectly.
I was going to test fit the Rondell 58's on mine today but it's only 17 degrees out.
