Oh what did I get myself into this time...

Post by Finally6 »

Well today I took delivery of a car that I have lusted after for awhile and now begins the chore of bringing her back to all of her glory. It is a 1985 M635csi with just a smidge under 118K miles on the clock. There have been no accidents per the previous 2 owners and no rust seen. The previous owner had the injectors, plugs, wires replaced along with some more items which I can't recall at the moment. More pictures will be pending soon once I get started.
The list to sort out from the top of my head:
Timing chain replacement, from what I heard and read this is a necessity with the early M's.
Sunroof seals replacement.
Clean up engine bay from the debris of the shedding trees.
Re-wrap the wiring harness, rather thin in spots.
Remove the 4 flares, or are they supposed to be there?
Exhaust replacement.
Sort out battery drain, per previous owner the amp was stolen and the battery drain issues started then.
Go through suspension, got a small wobble.
Clean and dye front seats.
Replace rear speaker pods with correct ones, the ones in there now are hideous.

I know that these wonderful cars got federalized when they were brought into the USA, but how can I tell what the options were originally on this 6? I have another euro that has headlight wipers, but this one doesn't. Yet I've seen pictures of some M635's that had headlight wipers on them, just want to be correct.

Nice!! First thing - change your sig. Amazing what some people do to these cars. For you though a new journey begins and you have the previous owner to thank for it. The trip will be well worth the time and effort but looking good (minus the deadwood) already.

When you do the timing chain, make sure you replace gears and tensioner too. In my 87 S38, I upgraded to the S14 tensioner, which is a big improvement.

I did a quick VIN decode and come up with the following.
Vehicle information

VIN long WBAEE310201050915

Type code EE31

Type 635 CSI (EUR)

Dev. series E24 ()

Line 6

Body type COUPE

Steering LL

Door count 2

Engine S38

Cubical capacity 3.50

Power 0

Transmision HECK

Gearbox MECH

Colour DIAMANTSCHWARZ METALLIC (181)

Upholstery SCHWARZ LEDER (0203)

Prod. date 1984-10-01

Order options
No. Description
291 BMW LM SCHMIEDERAD/KREUZSPEICH

350 WAERMESCHUTZGLAS GRUEN, RUNDUM

400 SLIDING SUNROOF MANUAL

427 WARNDREIECK MIT HALTERUNG

498 HEADRESTS IN REAR, MECHANIC. ADJUSTABLE

530 AIR CONDITIONING

I have to say that I am thrown as the warning triangle says euro car, but I don't believe an S38 engine is correct for a 1984 M635CSI. Can we see a good pic. of the valve cover?

Those VIN decoders always say S38 - don't know why. Otherwise, same color combination and birthday as my non-M Euro. Nice find.

The previous previous owner went speaker crazy, 8 speakers in all!! The rear panels will be replaced and those speakers will be moved to under the rear seats as in a previous post many years ago by Brucey and others. The rear speakers are going to get changed as well with something not so obnoxiously obtrusive!! The other speakers don't appear to be an issue with placement. One of the prior pictures shows the rear spoiler in need of some love or replacement, that I will address as well.

Those ADS plate speakers sound really nice. Totally wasted in those mounting locations though. Way to screw up a nice M6. Prob done in the 80's.

Looks like you missed this thread:

Brings tears to my eyes to see an M635 in that condition.

Oh baby, I can see those headers!

Realoem says S38 too. Most irritating! Arch flares meant to be there.

V V cool car, nice one.
