1985 635 Csi (Euro) 5sp - Jet Black

Post by SenorShark »

A couple of weeks ago I bought this car in California and shipped it to Texas where I live. I'm really excited about this project because I have never worked on any of the older bmws and the shark looks fantastic.

The one from San Diego? Was looking good already so you have a decent start. Even better is when it's looking and feeling good. Fun cars to drive!!

Yeah. I bought it from Tez. He's sharkski on bimmer forums might be the same username here. Great guy. It does need some work on it as far as tlc goes. Standard fluid changes and basic maintenance in addition to some body work and work on the hydraulic system.

It was an absolute blast to drive when I was in California and has been for some minor driving I've done in Texas.
It does have a really nice exhaust. I've ordered all the parts I need and Now I just need to put in the time.

I've done an oil change and seafoam end the car. It runs much, much better than before. Going to change the trans and diff fluid this weekend. I've already changed the brake fluid but the brakes are still meh so those need some work.

The car has also been detailed so that's nice (not that that effects anything mechanical).

Got new tires, a new accumulator, and an exhaust leak to fix this weekend...should have it street ready after that.

I recommend a thorough evaluation of your cooling system. Fix and replace anything suspect as summer is coming and the TX heat can eat that motor in 2 minutes. I have the same conditions here so my cars all have refreshed cooling systems for survival. Hoses and belts are cheap insurance every 3-4 years.

I think you'll like the Hankook V12's. I've had them on my 350Z for a bit over a year, and they perform very well.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will check on the cooling system once I get under the hood again. Ive replaced the accumulator but it didn't fix my braking issue. I'm going to replace the low pressure hoses and filter as see if that helps. I'm also going to flush the whole system a couple of times. There has to be a place where air is coming in.

I should have snapped a picture with the new tires mounted but oh well. I replaced the injectors with some 4-hole ford injectors and now it runs much better w/no backfires.

The brake system is still an issue though. I bled the brakes again and some very dirty fluid came out but they still don't work much at all. I also flushed the ATF in the PS system but steering & braking haven't improved. I'm going to replace the lines next but I don't think that will fix my issue...
Any suggestions? Could it be one of the pressure sensors that is causing the issue? ABS light isn't on but the regular brake light is on on the panel. Thanks in advance.

Check both your coolant level (when engine is cold) and your rear brake lights!

One of the brake lights is out but that's a non-issue compared to having no braking nor any steering assistance or abs.

The head also could use a good cleaning. Sludge is caked on there but there isn't any broken rocker arms so that's a plus.

I've flushed the cooling system but the light is still on. I'm still waiting for some parts to come in but for the power steering system. I bought some more lines and a pump rebuild kit. Now the abs light stays on when driving and the brake light will filicker.

Power steering pump is now rebuilt and all fluid has been drained. Just waiting on a high pressure line(pump to accumulator) and I'll be set.

Great car! Looking forward to see the progress. I have just the same problem that you have with the brakes and powersteering. I'll contact you if I find the problem

Thanks for the input and the link. I've replaced all of the lines for the system, rebuild the power-steering pump, replaced the accumulator, and replaced the sensors. Nothing has changed. I suspect the accumulator could have been a bad part or I rebuilt the pump incorrectly. I'm currently replacing the suspension, so the hydroboost system is on hold.

That oily residue on the oil pan could also be the lubricant in the A/C system. My compressor took a big dump last year when the shaft seal failed so now I am following Song in refreshing my A/C:compressor, evap, receiver dryer, etc.....

Updated photo after a fresh detail and buff. Driver's seat needs repair in addition to the radio. Chrome around the front and rear windshield needs tor be restored along with the front valance and bumper.

The other images are too large...

There's also some suspension pics. I installed B4 struts on all 4 corners and the front sway bar end links

Also replaced the afm with a new one and that took out any hesitation. I don't know if I have the full 218 hp but it is much more than I had previously. Everything is linear thru all of the gears and it can chirp the tires. Top end is good also.

I do need to clean up the engine bay when I get a chance. The a/c is currently ice cold so it would be nice to keep it that way. I still have yet to change the valve cover gasket so I was kinda delaying a full engine bay cleanup...but that's probably foolish.
