Re: how to remove fuel pickup and sender NEED HELP ASAP

Post by hornhospital »

It looks similar to this...this one is out of an E30, but they're pretty much the same. The long tube is the fuel level sensor, and it MUST be removed before the pump and fuel pickup will come out. The level sensor was temporarily bolted back on this assembly after removal.

After reading all your questions (and asking questions is perfectly fine. That's why we're here) I have some serious doubts about your ability to perform the engine swap you've talked about. I can't fault your enthusiasm and desire, but you seem to be having trouble with even simple tasks like removing the fuel pickup, and comprehending our attempts to help. I'm wondering how you'll react when you get into the really hard stuff. This isn't a criticism of you, just an observation that you may quickly get in over your head.

Post by griffo »

thanks for your concern but its something im always wanted since I bought my first beema my e30!
I have a great support team to help me complete the task its purely only the minor details I need help with such as the aftermarket ecu, rear subframe strengthening, what speedo to run so I can run the speed simulator yous all have told me to run.
I am no stranger to engine swaps but that is with old valiants so I don't have the technicalities or injection system that bmw has over valiants so that's were I lack in knowledge.
as I said before the fuel level sensor comes up about 3/4 way and then wont go any further. and there is NO nuts on the top which may be because it is a 1979 I don't know I think its best if I get a phew pics to help explain!
I think my relentless questions is coming off as I am very unexperienced or "dum" is a more forward word, but its just the fact I have never worked on one of these before. I was going to do a 3.1 stroker on the e30 but now I got this and it has those recaros and just an alround better car to to a stroker in and what better motor but the legendary s38b38!

Re: Do the 1979 633csi need upper cylinder lube?

Post by griffo »

ok thanks that has cleared it up majorly,
so my e30 is absolutely borerline than!
so when I do my s38 swap I will be better of using a e34 s38b38 because it is more than cabaple of running on unleaded?

Check the diagrams on this page.

It shows two different set ups, one like we are all describing plus another one. Does yours look like this? Can you put your vin into realoem to find the one on your car?

That, I couldn't tell you - never done it myself. Looks kind of nice without it, though.

Rear valance is entirely different , it's not a simple bolt on job.

There is something unique about the early style-- if it was me, I would keep it. It's not like you have the ugly US rear bumper...

e12 m535i?

Post by griffo »

hi all I have been doing some research and it shows that the e12 m535i had a stronger rear end.
could anyone educate me how these were strengthened?
also what Is available for e12 based e24s in terms of bigger/stronger diffs?
I am asking this question because I want to use the e12 setup on my e24 with the s38!

That part is called a pitman arm. I have an 88 635csi and have a set on the rear subframe near the bottom side of the trailing arms. Not sure what specific purpose they serve as far as suspension performance goes.

IIRC, It controls lateral movement of your lower suspension swing arm so it doesn't eat the inboard and outboard pivot bushings, also common to your lower swing arm

Me, too, and I prefer the thinner profile chrome bumpers by a wide margin.

No. Coilovers control up and down movement, nothing else. The 'dogbones' are there for a reason: control of lateral movement.

so how can I simulate that on my e12 baser?
would I simulate it with a massive anti roll bar or rear shock tower strut?
