1988 635 - kinda scam victim here.. but still ok

Post by sixxxer »

Ok Guys.... time to introduce myself. I am Tony ... and am originally from Europe but the last 5 years I live and work in the US. I have been eyeballing the 6ers since the 90s and finally decided it is time to buy one and have another dream come true. So I was looking for a fine example for about 7-8 months and finally decided to buy one over ebay. Sadly the car was from Florida and I am from NY ... also at the time I was extremely busy and didn't have any chance to actually go and see the car in person. I decided to trust the guy and also the pictures of the car where quite promising. I know you never buy a car without driving it ...but hey .. I decided to take a risk and I guess it kinda backfired.
So the car was advertised as mint and in great running condition.. with absolutely no problems. Which turned out to be absolutely not true ... but hey ... I will do some work and make it my dream car in the near future.... I hope 8-[

Here are some pictures ....

What kind of issues are you having??

What is the Vin?

Did you have a Mechanic in California do a PPI?

Did you have a Car Fax or Vin Check?

I wouldn't call yourself a Victim, lack of knowledge...

Live and Learn,
Dash all cracked...
engine doesn't sound so good..
battery gets drained ..seems there is a parasite leak.
Tachometer doesn't work.

Ye had car fax ... milles match. Just the car wasn't driven or taken care of for around 2 years and it shows.
Car is still not in terrible condition ..and is a very good start for a project.

This car looks similar to the one your bought. But this one is in Florida not California.

Any car from a sunny state with high miles with likely have a cracked dash. Pictures should show that.

VIN: wbaec8419j3266449

For $4200 not a bad car but 200K miles is a little high.

88 has the B35 engine which is a good thing.

Auto trans is less desirable but....

If you don't have any service records I would start your maintenance with a baseline.. Here is a good link on my e28 on how to base line your car. To make it more reliable and give you piece of mind.

Good luck!

Wow, looks like a nice and neat car, at least on those photos :o
I did something similar buying a car from a dealer over the internet, but I did not do any checks at all on it  :-k
My '89 Highline came from Carlisle, Pennsylvania and I expected some rust of course, perhaps some of the electrical not working properly, certain dings here and there, things like that. :-" Well, it's a +25 years old car
Well, I paid $3K for it plus $1K to get it all the way to El Paso, TX which puts me close to your price range. All in all the car was in good conditions, of course some wear and tear was expected (seats, minor cracks on the dashboard, OBC working, but low light and not readable in daylight, etc.) Cruse Control is disconnected, but I have not yet found time to connect it again :-({|=
I'm happy with my purchase and perhaps I got lucky with an honest car dealer. \:D/
