My 6'er

Post by sansouci »

I've owned my 1984 633CSI for about 26 years. Sometimes in the garage, and sometimes not. It hasn't been my DD for the last 20 years but I want to do it some justice. I am inspired by Song's work on a same-vintage car although mine has some other faults. The paint is faded (Bronzit Beige) and I'm getting some rust bubbles around the rear wheel arches and the interior needs a refresh. So about two summers ago, it got a new water pump. This past summer, I took it to a full classic restoration shop and got a bit of a jolt with a quote for a full, glass out, exterior restoration: $10k for labor, $5k for materials and $5k for any needed parts (trims, etc.). Since it is an automatic and not an M, I couldn't justify it at this point (maybe if my lotto hits!) So this summer I'm going to restore the A/C with a new condensor (just arrived); new compressor, new hoses, new dryer, etc. I also need to replace the pass. side rear swing arm because if you can believe it, the pittman arm bolt snapped off in the swing arm and I couldn't drill it out. I figured if I have to pull it to have a machine shop work on it, I might as well replace it. Oh, and last week, the brake pad warning light lit up for the first time in a while. If I have some spare time, a full leather rejuvenation/feeding would be nice too. And the speaker pods are curling from age. The thermostat housing is corroded and I'm inclined to change it but the time-temperature sensor is NLA and I don't want to risk wrecking my original one.

So we have a foot of new snow on Eastern Long Island and spring is a ways off. So I will make my parts list and begin taking some pictures for you to enjoy. As my wife calls it "repair porn."

What will also keep me busy is restoring my 94 740il....

Look forward to seeing you progress with this Ken ,we need more stimulating threads like this to motivate me out into the garage again.
Like you I have a long list posted on the garage wall ,mostly small detailing jobs but in the end worthy.
Time to get started ......
26 years of ownership deserves a compliment , well done .

Hey, glad I inspired someone! I've got a few spare parts if you want anything. For example, I have a 80 degree centigrade thermostat that fits on the original thermostat housing. I had to change my corroded housing and it turns out that it requires a different updated thermostat. So if you need the an original thermostat, just PM me.

Also, I got two adjustable bottom brackets for the Sanden type wing compressor, a shorter and longer one. I'm going to use the longer one. If you need the shorter, it's yours.

I can add to your "parts porn".

I look forward to tracking your progress. We'll most likely be doing the A/C at the same time.

When I use my VIN 6997510, it says none of the parts are applicable to my car therefore I can't see part numbers..Also, do you have strange hose routing since the ports are in a different place? PM sent

I think you are just going to need to capture in higher resolution. My MacBook Pro has the Retina display, which is about 4x a normal display. Everything turns out big when I screen capture. Here is is below. Big enough for you?
The older 633 compressor configuration.

That's terrific. So now that we see the parts, how do we get the part numbers if we don't have the correct vin number? And is the main bracket 64 521 284953 sure looks different.
Just puzzling.

So I haven't posted in a while as the only progress has been acquiring seemingly random parts as the opportunities arose. But Song has been a wonderful inspiration, plus that I have retired from my day job so there is time to be filled. I won't post the same pics as Song as that seems pointless. But I will try to fill in the blanks and always ask for advice when I am stumped.

I have been trying to get the correct Sanden at a good price, but the exact model can be ordered directly at $219 on Sanden's website. I've posted elsewhere on BC about having run into a dead end at Compresores Miami who sells both Sanden and clones on ebay. While Jay Stratton could not locate all the bearings to do a first class job on the wing cell compressor, I may just go for new green seals, refresh the hoses (new hose on old fittings) and see if that works.

I will likely post intro pictures in a few days now that wrenching season is here.
Wish me luck.

I've got one of these extra shiny ones on my car:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SANDEN-508-AC-C ... 8z&vxp=mtr

Or, for a more OEM-look:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-SD508-Sande ... u9&vxp=mtr

I know these are the cheaper clones, but I have yet to hear of anyone having a problem with one. Mine purrs like a happy kitten, especially on R152a.

Dean,
That is truly bling bling for something that resides in the bottom of the engine bay.
We have a Friday night get together of older and oldish cars that I am going to attend. Saw a Sanden residing up top on a Chevy. Hits you right in the face with the reflections from the chrome. He did a Vintage Air install in a car that never had A/C.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Mine actually isn't that shiny anymore - a bit oxidized and dull, and I'm not crawling under there to clean it. It's a mediocre polish job, not chrome, and life is tough down there close to the road.

Looking for an aluminum evaporator

Post by sansouci »

Guys,
For my A/C refresh I want to have the option to replace the copper evaporatoor with an all-aluminum evaporator under the dash. Maybe I'm being OC about this.... All I could find was a BMW unit at Bavauto (and at dealers) for about $600+ which I suspect is the copper unit. For my E32, the newer aluminum ones are about $125.

Any suggestions?

Is aluminum supposed to be better? My wife had a Volvo 850T and the aluminum evaporators in those cars failed regularly every couple of years, and each time it was a $1300 repair. I was so happy when that car got rear-ended and totaled.

Hey, I have 2 Volvos in the family. I swapped out the evaporator core by myself on the wagon by myself over a 4th of July weekend.
Definitely aluminum and as I recall the part wasn't so expensive.

https://v70evapcore.shutterfly.com

It's been working for years and years since I replaced it. However, it was not simple.
Back then I didn't understand all the A/C stuff and had to take it to an A/C shop for the evacuation and fill. Now, because of the e24, I can do it all myself.

No way I would have ever attempted that job. I hated that car and it was nothing but trouble, but good for you on getting it done. Ours needed 2 evaporators in 3 years, and that was enough for me.

Well Friends,
Summer's gone and not much progress other than parts procuring and a lot of thinking and planning. I did notice that the rubber sheaths (for chafe protection) around the wiring bundle going into the doors is beginning to come apart. But i can't seem to find it on realoem (my vin is 6997510). I would guess that I would need to disassemble the door and all the wiring to replace it. Other alternative might be to wrap it with the fiber tape that is used on other sections of the harness.
Guys--thoughts and suggestions?

I am still hoping to make some progress before I head South after the New Year.

The rubber concertina sheaths come as part of the door wiring loom. It is a major job to replace them, as one end of the loom has to have the connecting plugs dis-assembled.

You need a selection of pin removal tools to do the job. Here are just some of those required.

Minor repair done today
I had been getting an errant "brake lining" light on the dash and upon inspection, the wire had been worn through from rubbing on the wheel. So I bought the PEX brand from eEuroparts (about $4.50-made in Hungary). The previous units I had bought years ago from Bavauto had slightly thicker wires and/or insulation rather than the two thin unprotected wires on the PEX. So I beefed up the insulation with a layer of old fashioned friction tape and a layer of teflon thread tape. One other tip I learned is to route them under the rubber nipple cover for the brake bleeder. Hopefully it will last the life of the brake linings.
I would have loved to use shrinkwrap but I didn't have the size to go over the sacrificial end.
Every day I am in awe of the work that Songzun did to rehab his 6. Maybe it is youth and good weather and my progress is far slower than his.

Cheers,
Ken
