My henna 84

Post by TBM »

Well...

Ive posted all over the place on this forum with the different upgrades that I have implemented and I think it's time to bring it all under one roof as I'm on a venture to to a lot more.

Some of you have seen my posts about the brakes I have installed and I really don't want to go into it again...LOL

I want to make the car a little more comfortable, higher performing and more reliable... I don't know what I will be able to achieve but here it goes anyway.

So we start at the body shop a full year back.

Parts streaming off the car and some arriving from dealer... I bought new Handle exterior seals as well as new windshield and seal, front seat pads (complete), L and R door seals, Emblems, Nose grills, all new screws and bolts for center console...

So..

It took a while and NOT all the work I wanted got done. The stripes came off which cause all kinds of other little issues. The exterior is now in descent shape with some areas getting fresh paint and it will keep for a while. The body guy was supposed to be a buddy but I paid for being friends with him.

Here she is being off loaded at the house:

Start of things,...General degreasing and taking things apart. As I go I decide what I want to upgrade, lighten, renew etc.

Not in pictures is the A/C compressor I pulled out already. So decided to rebuild my A/C complete:
I am having Jay Stratton rebuild my comrpressor. Its a Calsonic but I have some extra goodies I'm going to try to add to the mix:
I'm having all internal parts that are turning (bearing: Going Ceramic like my front hubs..Makes are HUGE difference in reduction of friction)
The metal parts like the housing, drum, and vanes are getting WPC treatment (www.wpctreatment.com). I am a dealer for them as I'm in the Cryo business and offer it as a supplement to our services. This will reduce the drag inside greatly as well...All in the name of keeping the A/C but reducing the draw on the motor.

Clutch with bearing..Notice the bearing has stakes holding it in. Jay and I figured out (mostly JAY) how to remove the bearing without causing damage to the clutch pulley, while when putting it back using Loctite.

I also decided while I was degreasing her that the steering pump needed a little love..Plan is to WPC the internals, Cad coat the hub and brackets and generally clean up the housing. As you will see I did a little house keeping on the gouged housing..might as well as I want to put things back that look like they've been worked on.

I want an M6 in red! For now, will live vicariously through you.

In the picture of the interior at the beginning, the dash looks perfect. Is that original or does it have a dash cap or someting?
Didn’t M6 come with leather covered dash?

Hi Song...

Dash has a cap and is NOT in good shape. This is an '84 and they didn't come with leather until later.

Yeah the color is very nice. Stay tuned I have A LOT more to post..

I was starting to pull some parts and moved the speed reference sensors and the one on the left just fell apart in my hands. For safety sake I am replacing them both as the connectors are probably both brittle. Ordered two from ECS as even my dealer wholesale price on "OEM" was more.

The two sensors came out pretty dirty with LOTS caked on them..So i took some photos to see if I needed to to clean the area inside the bores. Got one of my trusty pipe brushes out...

On to the reservoir and hydro hoses...

I took the entire system apart cause I plan to shorten the high pressure hose going to the brake booster. I want to make room for a larger plenum. I will eventually move the brake fluid reservoir remote as well. Meanwhile I need to find a better solution for the low pressure hoses that leaked and created MOST of the grease on the left side of the car! I wanted to use compression fittings with PTFE hoses on the various low pressure hoses so I sent the reservoir to BMRS to see if it could be done-a la-the pic below from MOTOIQ:

But the different sizes would not work with the available fittings..

The high pressure hose I took out was also in dire shape.. Like I said good thing I'm going step by step through all the systems.

Went to WPC treatment plant today to plan which internal parts needed to be treated for reduced drag and better seal. As a side note..ALL the pieces config back from Jay were wrapped immaculately and labeled Immaculately. I know when someone is a pro by the way they handle themselves and Mr. Stratton is one of them. I will not ever hesitate using him on any project he can handle.

Thank you TBM,

For including me in your posts.
I am rebuilding his, TBM's BMW A/C Compressor, and PSP, for him.
He requested, that he wanted to do some Cryogenic treatment to the parts and also some Cad plating before
I reassembled his, Calsonic/Behr/Bosch Wingcell A/C compressor, and his PSP. for his m6 Euro.
Okay by me.

Best,

As I'm waiting for the Hydro canister to get done in new lines and the PS pump and A/C to come back from Jay I made some moves with the trans. Since It's really hard to find parts for that sucker I bought an 265CR taken from a 635csi. I figure if I ever sell this car I want to offer a working 280 and a 265 that I'm going to completely rebuild. Plan is to covert all the bearings Ceramic from performancebearing.com. The cage bearings and all other internals are getting WPC'd as well as Cryo treated by my company. I'll document the rebuild here. I believe, from what I've seen that I can cut down on the friction by at least 30%-40% and of course get a lot more longevity from it (that's a sure thing).

I bought the trans on Ebay. Came as described externally.

Trans saga continues....

So we got a really good look at the trans and took it apart..Of course when you buy something on Ebay and they don't take enough photos your'e bound to find something wrong...
The front shaft sleeve for the throwout bearing was chewed out badly. The gearbox however looks pretty good inside except for some melted bearing retainers on two bearings! Which means it was run without oil at some point. Someone has been into that trans in the past and the inner bell housing got shrapnel from a fragged clutch. I got a descent price for it so on to fixing whats wrong.
Ill be replacing all the roller bearings with new Ceramic bearings..All caged pin bearings will get WPC'd and the main shift rod has to be center ground and hard chromed as its got some low spots from years of use and abuse. I had a new sleeve made for the TO bearing out of Stainless. I could have bought a new cover and sleeve but its on BO and the stamped out piece isn't as nice as Stainless :D.
