Thanks! That's very helpful. Also bought a Draper reset tool - they're pretty cheap on eBay.

Working my way back - the rear corners / light surrounds will be the last bit of welding. The Duck Tape is to stop the cover chaffing...

That is looking fantastic!

Those repair sections from BMW are such a good idea - addressing an area that's an obvious rust trap with a neat and elegant solution. I wonder if BMW have heard that the front wings can suffer???

I reckon we'll be having a Gloucestershire/Oxfordshire meet before the end of April with your rate of progress - amazing work.

Because nearly all of the chrome has been keyed to help the paint stick to it I'm having to replace it - never paint chrome! I had hoped that the rear bumper would be retrievable but sadly someone has had a go with a sander. These parts almost look very good until you look carefully - if re-chromed they'd come up beautifully, but it's not worth it.

Thanks Brucey, always nice to have a bit of encouragement.

Been working on the rear OS arch today, only had two areas of rust but the edge of the inner arch was quite crunchy. The photos only really show the highlights as refabricating the inner arch and joining it to the outer (a ready made panel which needed to be adapted) was really difficult.

Received my new brake booster - quite expensive but Mister Auto are doing them for £280 at the mo, which is not bad.

Fitted the new booster, bomb and pressure switch (which I broke) today, fairly easy job. I'm pretty sure the atf fluid leak is what's saved this car from severe rust!

That is excellent work there - I wonder how many times you skinned your knuckles getting the booster past all the pipework!

randall977 wrote: Thu Mar 15, 2018 7:15 pm The cutting out continues... I can now see the end of the rust, it won't be too long before I can start fabricating new sections. I ordered two parts from BMW - a floor pan cover (£7) and the rear corner of the inner sill (£16).
You've really inspired me to crack on with the project car with your build thread - many thanks indeed!

I cannot find the above parts on Realoem. I've been looking under "Bodywork" in the absence of anything more likely - might you dig out the part numbers if you get a minute?

Many thanks, and please keep the updates coming,

I normally look on Wallothnesch as I find it easier to find parts there. I didn't end up using my inner corner panel - so if you need it let me know.

Parts are as follows;

1. Floor pan plug - 41128200462 around £8 - see here https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/karosse ... 51-92.html
2. Corner rear inner sill section - 41141820496 £15 foe the RHS, £40 for the LHS - See here https://www.wallothnesch.com/en/karosse ... 41-11.html

Btw - I think Wallothnesch are great - I may have mentioned that before!

Following the discovery of the thrust bearing wear on the crankshaft I collected a replacement crankshaft from BMW Classic Spares in Weedon (amazing place!). I dropped the sub frame and suspended the engine from straps, however, found that this was not good for removing the crank nut. I put the sub frame back in and made a special tool to undo the nut...

After hours with a 36mm 3/4" socket, 4' breaker bar, scaffolding pole, blow torch and two of us trying we gave up on the nut and drilled it out - this took 5 minutes!

Eventually I removed the crankshaft to find the original shells with very little wear - what a shame that one unwanted groove means the crankshaft has to be scrapped.

Next step - new shells, gaskets, timing chain kit - reinstall...

Question - how do you remove the timing chain and guide without damaging the head gasket?

Timing chain and guide removal without taking the head off is not recomended. It can de done but expect oil leaks to occur. You have to remove both upper and lower timing chain covers to clear both crank and cam shafts. The head gasket includes the area between the upper and lower covers so you would have to cut that on the "high side" to reduce the possibility of oil leaks.

At this point you've gone much farther than anything typical so I would consider a head refresh for the motor.

Why is it designed so you have to change the head gasket at the same time as the timing chain? It would have been easy to make it so you could remove the chain etc without doing so - it seems ridiculous.

Looking great.

Do you have any pictures of the seat mount replacement? I need to tackle that next.

I am curious as to the quotes you had gotten to rechrome the bumpers. For some reason I thought mine were polished aluminum with a clear coat that is now failing. My body shop suggested painting but I'd rather have something shiny back there.

Ken, this is an issue of US versus Euro models :-k

The Euro models indeed have chrome bumpers up through MY87, wherein BMW went to world bumpers and everybody got the same setup [-(

But the US cars have hard anodized aluminum bumpers, and your body shop has one idea, but I have to agree with you regarding having shiny bits back there =D>

You can remove them and have them stripped and anodized again, or perhaps clear coated :-k

Or, do a Euro bumper conversion #-o

Quite a productive day - installed the oil pump, sump and gasket (which was a pain). Set up the timing, primed the tensioner (new chain and tensioner guide fitted), PAS pump, alternator and belts back on. Dropped the front sub-frame, cleaned it, welded in a steering box reinforcement, repainted and refitted with new engine mounts - reinstalled...job done.

The headlining has been bothering me for a while, discoloured and white bits keep dropping down from it. I needed to fit a new windscreen anyhow so removed the chrome strips and thought I'd have a go at using my feet to remove it...it cracked. I then used lollipop sticks (as recommended by Wattsmonkey) to work the seal out from the inside - the whole thing was out in 5 minutes. Removed the rear screen in a similar manner - took a bit longer but worked fine.

Next I removed the inner sunroof trim, then removed the sunroof, then the headlining...

The white bits aren't the headlining but rubber sound deadening on both sides - it all had to be removed and made a big mess - good to get it out!

At last things are going well, no rust around the screens or on the roof. Washed the headlining and will reinstall after the car has been resprayed.

Been stripping all the panels, non metallic paint is so much easier to remove - I use Starchem as other brands don't seem to work. After removing the paint I wet and dry the panels with an alkali solution, then clean, clean, clean...
