1985 M635csi: Nov 2020 updates, Exhaust and AC

Post by hffvdbl »

Hello all. I have been looking for a euro e24 for a couple of years and ended up finding an '85 M635csi not too far away from me here in Texas. I am excited to have the car and look forward to restoring it to its former glory. This is my first e24. I have a couple of e28s and and an e12 so I'm not new to older BMWs. I am optimistic about the condition of the car mainly because it spent the first 20 years in California and the next 10 or so in Texas so it is incredibly dry. This also means that the soft bits are dry too and there's a lot that needs replacing. The car has been somewhat neglected over the last few years it would seem. We'll definitely spend some time getting the car back where it needs and deserves to be.

I will post pictures as progress is made. I put some Hartge 3 pc wheels on that I usually have on the red car pictured but I think they suit the e24 better as they're 10" wide in the rear and the car just swallows them up. This seems like a great community and I look forward to learning about this great model of BMW.

Welcome to the forum!

One question: what tires and wheel width are you running in the front? No rubbing? I run 235's and they are very tight to the strut... maybe the offset?

Thanks for the warm welcome! I love the color too! It's a special order (Sonderlackierung sp?) in Blue Black metallic. To me it looks really similar to Diamond Schwarz.

Tire size on the front wheel is 225/45-17 and the wheel is 8.5 x17 et 13

tire on the rear is 245/40-17 and the wheel is 10 x 17 et 18, I could be running a wider tire in the rear. the 245 was to fit it on my e28

I had an M 635 in that colour. The only one in the UK. I sold it about 2 years ago to a guy who had a new shell that he

wanted to put all the parts in.

I got similar wheel spec but have 255/40/17 on rear. U need to employ some counter measures to cope with the stagger otherwise understeer is a big issue.

Front and rear strut tower bars are defiantly worth it, and a rear adjutable sway bar. Upgrading all bushes really helps these cars also. Along with some extra front -ve camber. As they are non adjustable u can get another -1deg or so from the Ireland engineering stock style top mounts. It’s great having a “classic” car outhandle modern sports cars and having a good chassis under you makes I enjoy your power more

It's been almost a year since the last update on this car. I just finished having the exhaust system fixed. When I bought the car it had a really hacked setup, I'm sure this is a common experience for all of us. Along the way the euro headers were hacked and welded. It was essentially a euro header and a bunch of junk and then a Super Sprint rear stainless muffler. Over the last six months I have waited patiently to get the Super Sprint midsection and straight pipes (in place of the cat) from Italy.

The shop that installed the new pieces also Ceraokoted the headers and restored the connections from the headers to the next straight pipe section. They did this by adding some stainless tubing back in and installing vbands. This is such a nice feature for ease of maintenance. The color is not accurate on the red cloth. The engine bay shot is much better representation of the in person color.

Took the opportunity to Vapor Hone the water pipe and put new bosch connectors on the water temp sensors at the same time. As mentioned earlier, this gives a better impression of the color[b/]

Here you can see what the straight pipes are replacing

Here's what the old transition looked like at the end of the headers, definite improvement!

Here is the new midsection and where it attaches to the rear box

A lot of work went into this job and I appreciate Mike, Jordan and Coulter at Mporium for doing such a great job! If you are in the North Texas area I recommend them highly.

I'll make a seperate post on the complete air conditioning overhall that they did for me.

Air Conditioning Overhaul

Post by hffvdbl »

Air Conditioning Overhaul:

System was inoperable and I live in a hot, humid climate with a black car. The objective was to replace the system with components that use 134 effectively and to refurbish any parts or seals in the cabin that would dimimish the air flow to the passengers.
New Parts:
parallel flow condensor
new custom AC lines
Sanden compressor
expansion valve
receiver dryer
Layne's Sanden bracket
blower motor
seals in the ducting

Refurbished:
evaporator

Looks super tidy, nice work... You might want to replace the old pusher fan for a Spal that has a lot higher capacity. There is a big difference and the cost of the spal fan is negligible.

Also, could you possibly show what the upper brackets look like for the parallel flow condenser?

Thanks for sharing!

Appreciate the comments, we discussed using a modern fan, for some reason Mike (my guru) likes to use the stock fan. I'll ask why again. I need to do a couple of things to the car this week, I'll snap some pictures of the upper brackets and a link to the PFC I used.
