Today I turned my attention to the trunk panels and repairing the frail and brittle plastic trim. I reinforced these panels with fiberglass and patched any holes.

I also cleaned the trunk as it was quite dirty, I also repaired the inner cardboard trunk panel (with fiberglass) that fits behind the rear seats and fitted the missing tools and a new BMW blue cloth.

]For whatever odd reason, my car was missing the right side door hinge inner metal panel - I figure this is a decorative cover and also a protection plate or guide for the power window harness.
So for fun, I made one today as well. I started off with a piece of paper as a template, then onto cardboard, once the shape was 100% correct, then the final piece was fab'd from 1/16" aluminum. Made by hand with the tools you see below.

Do you guys remember the first post where I had all the new parts on the garage floor..where I couldn't even walk?
From last year: Here is that same area today, all the parts are installed on the car and I get my garage space back.
Its been a great experience.

Well I spent a little over $500 (that cost is for the stripes themselves and the labor to install) for a set of the OEM vinyl stripes in silver (bought from Burt - thank you!). Really does a great job of contrasting the paint and flows with the car. I was a little anxious about installing them, but very happy that I did.

Yep , I agree, it looks magnificent .
The stripes really finish the body detail and always look nicer in the light silver .
I'm so glad you elected to go with the Rial's too .
I wish you lots of enjoyment with it , you deserve it .

Thank-you kindly Paul and olympia57
I appreciate it, lots of time has gone into the car but very pleased with the outcome.
Yesterday, I replaced the fuel line from the tank to the pump and then spent the entire day scrubbing and cleaning the chassis (my back by 9pm was saying "Ok enough!!!"). All the old undercoating, any previous old stains etc were all removed and it is great to see the factory sealant in good condition and really how clean it is underneath.

What a terrible job!
Looks like the bottom is in a good condition, must be a car spend most of it's existence in a sunny state.

Haha...nice sarcasm!
The car lived in Arizona for many years and then Texas, so it has really helped preserve it.

Re: I'll Be Busy For a While - 1979 Euro 635CSi (M90 Powered)
No more ripped shift boot and cracked, delaminated steering wheel. Making the interior neat with color, wood and new leather.
It cost $425 for the steering wheel alone, but it wasn't just a simple recover and hand stitch. The original or OEM wrap had delaminated from the steel rim and was "squishy" so to speak, so it had to be completely rebuilt from the steel center core with all new foam, then new leather with then hand stitched with the red thread. I am very impressed with the end result as well.

Re: I'll Be Busy For a While - 1979 Euro 635CSi (M90 Powered)
Just a quick follow-up on this car.
I sold it on Bring-A-Trailer in May 2021 for $31,500.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1979-bmw-635csi-5/
The new owner from Phoenix, AZ only kept it for a year and then re-listed it on Bring-A-Trailer this past July, it sold for $26,500:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1979-bmw-635csi-8/
He sold it because he has a young family and with the car not having A\C and living in Phoenix, it stayed in the garage for 6-months of the year.
Strangely enough the new (current) owner who bought it off BaT, has now listed the car on eBay for the same price of $26,500. I found it quite by accident while on eBay one night, I actually couldn't believe my eyes.
I contacted him and asked "why ?". He said that his mechanic, did a recent oil change and a lab analysis on the oil and it came back with higher content metal than normal. I asked several times to see the oil lab result but he never forwarded it to me. I find this strange as the M90 is bullet proof and the car only has 96k miles.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/304682406681?n ... 7675.l2557
I spent 2-years and over $20k restoring it, lots of sweat to make it really nice, so I hope the car finds a good home with a new owner who loves it.

Yasin,
Can you comment on the process of removing undercoating you described on page 3?
Also curious how it looked before the photo you shared... I think I need to do this on my early car and am not quite sure what I will be getting into, or how to remove the coating...

Re: I'll Be Busy For a While - 1979 Euro 635CSi (M90 Powered)
VERY nice job!!
A few questions:
Why did you opt to coat the sub frames silver instead of black? They look nice, but curious as to the choice. Normally they are all black.
Looks like you removed the under coating (specifically in the wheel wells), but did not replace it. Why was that?
Did you powder coat the intake manifold and plenum?
Comment 1: The metal in the oil bit is probably BS. I rebuilt the top end of my M90 at 150K miles, and the bottom end was solid as a rock. The only thing she needed was valves and a new head gasket (dread cylinder to cylinder blow by).
Comment 2: I removed all of the glass and trim when I painted mine. No issues at all. Need to be super careful getting the front and rear glass out though. Even for an otherwise rust free car, there was a tiny bit of rust in the lower corners of the window wells (old acessible with the galss and gaskets out. So, IMO, removing the glass is a risk, but it is worth it...
The pic was pre clear coat. Painted in my garage. Paint is still good 15 years later!

I soaked the chassis with Zepp purple de-greaser for a few days and then power washed it and it came right off. It took a few passes. Give it a shot.

I opted for silver as it's a great color yet not gaudy or loud and a nice departure from the somber black color you always see on the chassis.Cogeniac wrote: ↑Sat Jan 13, 2024 2:03 am VERY nice job!!

Intake manifold was all powder coated - correct.
I agree on your comment 1...I think it is B.S as well.

I power washed mine and also scraped all the stuff that was still loose. I re coated it and while painting it, we did the underside body color That was how mine was from the factory/. I also re coated all the seams and slopped it on with a paint brush and it looks factory
