I couldn't say. They were there when I bought the car and 80s BMW air being marginal at best. Especially in Florida.

Story I heard way back when was the Germans insisted the a/c was fine so when some execs from Munich came to the states one hot summer they were picked up in a BMW that had the windows fixed so they would not roll down and proceeded to take them on a long drive to the meeting. The point was made. A popular 3 series conversion was to replace the a/c compressor with one designed for US cars, IIRC Chevy ones.

I have heard that same story, forget where. The AC system is my next project. I'm about to pull the trigger on the parallel flow condenser. But I don't need to shit up this thread with my AC.

I think that was written in the book "just needs a recharge".

"Just Needs A Recharge" was written by Rob Siegal, the Hack Mechanic =D>

He's been on Big Coupe here and there, while owning a 6 :-"

Not sure if he still has one, since he's got about a dozen cars

It's a great book! I loved to read it.
I also have the "guide to European automotive electrical systems", also a great guide, I use it in combination with the Bentley Publishes E28 service manual, good combination.

Has anyone explored the technology of heads up displays?

Many times have I wondered why the gauges couldn't be mounted directly in the louvered pane by making the holes a tight fit for the gauge with lip of the gauge bezel securing it in the front against the panel? There are plenty of those grilles around for experimentation. I can't do it on my early car as it has after market air with a neat louvered panel that has the A/C controls mounted in a molded in location. These were used by the dealers when installing air at the dealer ship. I have 2 which I haven't installed yet, but hopefully the switches are good and have never seen any others but it is a factory look

Love the gauge install.

I have thoughts of a radio head unit delete and a gauge pod in its place. I only have an air/fuel gauge but it’s hidden behind the check control screen and only use it occasionally for troubleshooting

I don't believe so. I just flipped through the early parts of the book where I would expect something like that and did not see it. I remember seeing it someplace. Roundell being the most likely source. Maybe Jackie Jourette's history column toward the back maybe?
