Other Route Ideas

Post by hoadie »

So to follow on from discussions that were had today about NSW trips involving overnight stays, I'd like to put forward some ideas

2 nights

Day 1 : Sydney to Port Mac via Putty Rd & Gloucester (~500km)

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&sour ... 876709&z=7

Day 2: Port Mac to Coffs via Armidale (~430km)

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&sour ... e=UTF8&z=8

An alternative route would be to go through to Grafton, then south to Coffs (~520km)

http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=d&sour ... e=UTF8&z=8

Day 3: Home.

Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour via Armidale looks bloody epic. I'd be in for that.

They look good. I've not been along any of those roads before so I'm up for it at some time or other.

I did Armidale to Port last year and that road truly is epic!

On the day I went through, I passed around a dozen of those Italian horse emblem cars, but otherwise it was relatively quite for a Saturday morning. Drivers were for the most part very considerate and let me pass when it was safe. It really is a bloody good bit of road. Shits on the Putty Road I reckon!

All well and good, but when though? The long weekend when i'm dog minding is no good to me and you can't do this without me. I'll cry.

You don't have anyone who can look after the boy?

BTW, here's the alternate route from Berry to Kangaroo Valley

Anyone been on the roads between points A and B ?

Or this section of the Thunderbolts Way ? (I've done bits of the northern section), and it's nice but not worth going out of your way to do)

Looks superb doesn't it. Adding the trip to and from Canberra adds about 250 kms so it's definitely do-able from there.

Definitely doable, I'm in for that one for sure. Every part of that route is sensational, from the wide flat straights along the Snowy Mtns Hwy to Kiandra as well as the mountain passes to Khancoban and via Tom Groggin.

Matt took me along the Kiandra route back at the start of June and it was great, and the Alpine Way is a fantastic cruise.

This is a fantastic high country drive Ben, the scenery and the roads were made for Grand Touring. There are several places for photos or side trips, the winding roads are superb.

Depending on the actual driving date, we could have breakfast at my place in Jindabyne and then tour the mountains.
There is a National Parks entry fee but from memory you can get a 'through pass' which allows you to drive to Khancoban via Thredbo for free. This pass does not allow stopovers at the resort towns.

That would be awesome Matt!

Do any of those roads get closed off over winter? I seem to recall that entering the Khancoban to Kiandra road there was a gate and a sign saying the road can be closed in winter, but the road from Tom Grogins to Jindabyne seems to be at a lower altitude.

Cool! Glad to see there are great things happening in other parts of this world! Looks like a lot of fun and we are waiting to see pics and video!

I thought about moving to Australia and when I learned that you guys drive on the left side I thought I try this on the interstate here! That was a disaster and I am not moving anymore! Just kidding!

Thanks Rainer,

It's great to see that you are putting in the effort to encourage more regular get-togethers and drives in your part of the world too. We've got a good bunch of people here who enjoy putting the Sixers through their paces. Generally we flood the threads with pictures of our cruising fleets, we just didn't get around to taking any this time! But there's plenty to see in some of our previous threads and there will surely be more to come.

And we all appreciate being able to see these cars in use around the world, so keep your cruises happening and keep the pictures coming.

Regards,
Ellis.

Ben the Cabramurra road is closed from just north of the Corryong turnoff to Cabramurra from June long weekend to October long weekend and sometimes also if snow conditions warrant it.

I will check the actual dates with National Parks Admin.
In the event of closures clashing with the proposed trip date, there are other routes that are equally enjoyable.
One such trip is Canberra - Cooma - Berridale - Middlingbank/Eucumbene - Adaminaby - Kiandra - Yarrangobilly Caves - Talbingo - Tumut - Wee Jasper - Yass - Canberra. These roads are excellent cruising with lots for bends, nice places to stop for a feed/photos/chat/etc.

This route is also very suitable for a day trip.

That sounds like a really good trip. Is the road from Tumut to Wee Jasper sealed?

Its been a while since I did that section, it was dirt then, but may be tar by now.

You would think they made drugs for 'multiple login disorder' by now!
