RESTORING A SITTING GAS TANK?

Post by wab_jr » Fri Nov 03, 2017 9:08 pm

Well, the m635 has been sitting for a number of years and I'm ready to get back on this project. I borrowed an scope from a friend and looked inside what was (in 2004) a new gas tank and was greeted with quite an ugly scene. No leaks but quite a bit of rust and what appears to be sediment.
Any tips other than a new tank? I looked and they appear to be about double what I paid for one in '04. The 84Euro 635 tank "just" had what appeared to be sediment on the bottom whereas the M635 tank bottom, sides and neck looked scary.

You can have the tank cleaned ("boiled out" is the common term) and then coated internally to prevent further corrosion. I had one done for an E30 project. It was about $100 for the work.

Thanks Ken.
I'm hoping I can find this "locally"; however, I may be resource poor here in central Mississippi.

I've found that some radiator shops offer fuel tank services as well. Roger

I had it done in Mobile. I can get the particulars if you want. It was a radiator shop, as mentioned.
