Beginner Questions

Post by gte619n »

Hey fellas,

Honyama was nice enough to decode my VIN (viewtopic.php?p=195574#p195574) for me and I'm still trying to get to know this 1985 M635CSi that I just acquired. Going around the car, there's a couple of things I had questions about:

1. Should this car have fog lights? If so, how would I turn them on?
2. Should this car have power locks?
3. The interior is black. How many shades of black are there in the car? The seat leather, vinyl trim and dash and the carpet all seems to be somewhat different. Is that correct?

Was that equipment standard on these cars? I see some janky looking mesh over the fog light locations and there does not appear to be any central locking switch, but the the center console has some weird looking toggle switches that cannot be stock.

Would appreciate any direction.

Thanks!

1. Yes. The 'organ-pull' switch on the opposite side the headlight switch. The owners manual will have a picture. If they're not actually there then the wires should be - post some pics to help us help you.
2. Yes, standard on all E24's after 1982. There was no switch inside to operate it but you can retro-fit one as a mod. Post pics of the toggle switches again to help us help you.
3. It's 32 years old - EVERYTHING has faded at a different rate, you'll have to get used to it.

Hope that helps.

sharkfan,

Thanks for the tip. I guess I'm missing more than I thought. The switch is there, but it looks like that operates a rear fog as well?

As for the different shades of black, when it was new, was the vinyl dark gray and the leather seats black? I'm gearing up to work on the vinyl and the leather and would like to know what to aim for! Any particular brand of vinyl products that work the best?

Thanks!

I've wondered the same thing as I plan for that magical day when I've checked off the 101 other things on my list and I finally get to dying the carpet.

Vintage interior photos are always hard to come by but here's one:

As near as I can tell the carpet on the floor, door panel inserts and rear parcel shelf (has anyone ever put a parcel there?) was more of a charcoal gray and lighter than the black seats and perforated vinyl on the door panels.

That photo also shows the "flocking" in the instrument panel very well. If yours has that, or rather if yours has the nasty residue that used to be flocking, there was just a thread about that on the bimmerforums http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showt ... t=flocking.

Mason,

Thanks for that shot. I think that's the vibe I'm getting when I look at my car as well.

Does anyone have any dyes for the charcoal and the black for leather and vinyl that they particularly like?

Thanks,

Hey Griffo,

Here's a couple of pictures of the 308GTB. It's been a surprisingly good car, honestly. They're DIRT simple. Much simpler than the 3.0. Additionally, just about every service issue has a tutorial on Ferrari Chat or sometimes even a YouTube!

Oh also, 116k miles!
