Dedicated Laundry?

Post by sansouci »

I read many a post that says: "My wife will kill me trying to wash these greasy clothes!" So does anyone have a dedicated washer/dryer for your shop clothes or wash rags, etc?

We have an old washer we put in the green house. You can buy used appliance fairly cheap, at least around here. What I want next is a big oven, for powdercoating.

I made my own powdercoating oven out of a stove and a washing machine.
I stripped the washing machine apart so that i was left with the 4 sides and lined these with fibreglass ceiling insulation. Inside this I use scrap stainless steel sheeting, so it is now 4 insulated ss lined walls.

Next step was to pull apart the stove, an old upright unit with 4 hotplates on it. The top deck with the hotplates now sits under the washing machine walls so the heat rises from the bottom. The original thermostat sensor that was for the oven sits inside the new oven. I have wired the hotplates to be controlled by the thermostat and the oven timer through a small contactor. The original oven door is now a lift off lid on the top of the oven that you can see through. There is a rack that sits under the oven door so you can hang the job(s) on the rack, blow the powder on then lower the jobs still attached to the rack down into the oven and put the door over the top. It works a treat and can be extended by putting higher walls on it if you want to. You can see through the top while baking to check when flow out has occurred and time from then. You can vary the number of hotplates that are turned on to match the size of the job that is in there.

It's packed away at the moment, next time I get it out I will post some pics.

Since I do all the washing, I do it anyway. What the wife doesn't know about, she can't nag about

Just wondering if our oven gets hot enough to try powdercoating :-k Same comment as above as long as I can do it whilst she's out :-"

True - I've done some small parts in mine, and for most powers 450F does the trick. I have one of those Eastwood starter kits that works pretty well.
