Hartge fun!

Post by wattsmonkey »

Millions of jobs to do on the M, but felt the need to embark upon the repainting of one of the sets of Hartges I seem to have accumulated!

I know they aren't to everyone's taste, but I love them and they are the staggered 16" sizes that appeal to me and should fill the arches nicely (7.5" ET13 on the front; 8.5" ET25 on the back). I am not a fan of the cheap-and-nasty-looking plastic caps, hence black centres with BMW badges to go in the middle. 245/45/16s to go on the back; 225/50s on the front.

These wheels will end up on the M, but I know I'll be trying them for size on the 635 as soon as I've got tyres on them.

Excited! Also managed to put another coat of electox on the rust repairs. Lots of electrox, lots of repairs!

Cheers,

Rob

Another +1 on Hartge wheels! And I agree the plastic center cap seems comparatively cheesy. I'm thinking about having aluminum ones machined for me...

Merry Christmas to all!

My apologies for the enormous pics, thought I had that fixed

Gorgeous wheel. With the polished off-set it looks better than my mundane Hartges.
Not too much bling but, just enough.

I notice you may have a key to remove the center cap?
Mine has a flat head screwdriver slot at the very edge!

Question...

Post by JAWS »

I like your idea on the Hartge wheels , I also have the exact same wheels staggered as well , and one of my plastic center caps got warped , so I was thinking of taking them all out and doing the same , either painting centers black or just leaving centers silver and adding the roundel center caps in the hub hole as well. Only one problem , which is why Im messaging you , how are you planning to get that big of a BMW snap in cap to fill the Hub hole of 74.1mm? (or about 3 inches) I have called and checked and BMW didn't make a "snap in" center cap with the emblem that big. Any ideas? I have the same plan as you on this. I did some research though , and found out the porshe cayenne SUV's have a 3 inch snap in center cap , I was thinking of picking up 4 of them and adding the BMW roundel sticker over the porshe logo. Might work? Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks

Sorry to have procrastinated for so long... My wheels are

Front - 17x9 et19
Rear - 17x9.5 et21

The fronts are supposed to be 8.5 et13. There were no correct inner barrels when Klaus built them. I'll be getting the correct inner barrels soon and have them rebuilt. As of now I have to use a 5mm spacer to clear the front brakes so they stick out further than I'd like.

Now with badges

Post by wattsmonkey »

Cut 72mm+ discs of stainless steel to fit inside centre bore, bearing against the lip which the plastic covers locate on. Used retaining springs from an old set of metric wheels, with locating grooves made with a dremel tool.

70mm badges stuck on top.

Have sprayed backs of wheels with Dynax UC wax, which dries pretty much clear to give them a bit of protection.

Looking forward to a bit of arch filling!

Hartges stuck on 635. Picture with broken iPhone!

Regretting using Halfords wheel paint now: too dark, have a couple of cans of the Wurth silver too!

Ancient Pirelli P700s on back not helping traction, but nothing much available in 245/45/16.

Liking Uniroyal Rainsport 3s on front, but they are very soft-walled and "squidgy" with no rim protection at all (225/50/16).

Arches nicely filled, but still thinking it'd be better with the 7 1/2" ET13s all round with the 225 tyres.

MAX FILE SIZE EXCEEDED? Tiny pic, 97kb?

Thanks admin, I feel embarrassed about picture now though! I feel no shame about my parking skill: comedy hatchback in front not using the space!

Beautiful six and, I totally agree with Brian!!! #-o

It's a good thing I have a handicap placard 'cause the spaces are larger.
Since my Porsche, I've always parked away from everyone,
only to find two or three non-Porches right next to me when returning!!

I've gotten so used to parking the shark I leave a huge space ahead of my wife's Grand Cherokee when I park it! I get out and then realize I could have pulled forward another 3 feet.

It's "ju-ju" Greg.

Nicely surprised at how well that wheel looks on that interior, exterior, chrome trimmed colour combination. Like a tailored suit. The black centers compliment the rest of the car in just the right balance.

Just what was the process to make it look so nice?
Did you use a one inch fine tipped paint brush & two coats?
Gloss or semi gloss? I'm thinking gloss.

It looks good with a crappy iPhone camera with the distraction of the nose poking over into someone else's parking space Greg, but thanks for the compliment!

Looked pretty good once I worked out that painting the centres first, then masking up to do the silver made for a much neater finish.

The badges/centres are deeper than I'd like. It's a lot of work to slim down a really old-school clip on badge, but this would be the coolest solution.

Am defo going to paint up the spare fronts for maximum arch filling when the M is ready.

Loving the Hartges: am going to stick the E32s up for sale.

Cheers,

Rob

So that means you sprayed both the black and the silver???
Semi gloss or full gloss?? Did you sand anywhere?
In between coats or just before the first coat?
I'm looking for a full description.

Hi Greg,

Sanded down everywhere, oxidised bits down to the bare alloy, then filler, sanded down, filler primer, two coats sanded down, stupid stopper putty where I'd missed bits, then grey primer x2 coats, sanded, then the top coat x2, before t-cut to put a bit of shine into the paint. I did not use lacquer. The rear of the rims - and especially the fiddly hollow insides of the spokes - were sprayed with Dynax UB clear wax to offer a bit of protection.

This was not the right way to do it with different-coloured centres!

What I should have done was this:

Paint the black bits first (satin black's what I used), wait a couple of days for it to fully dry and start to properly harden, then mask up over the black paint because it's easy to get the line straight inside the bore. The silver then gets painted over the top.

Cheers,

Rob
