what;s the proper size tire?
Hi all-my 81 633 is finally running and now its time to sort out some other issues. the tires on the rear are Hankook Ventus, 245/50-16, only a couple of years old. the fronts are Goodyear Eagle, probably over 25 yrs. old, so will be replacing them asap. they are 225/50-16. Which size should I go with for the fronts?

The 225/50-16 is closest to stock size and are known to fit with the proper wheel. 245 will not fit in front easily.

Left & right control arms, upper and lower. Maybe the center link.
Then, it's a must to have a four wheel alignment.
Go to a reputable alignment shop that knows BMW.
Since no one has come up with the guy in San Diego that has parts,
I also suggest you join the BMW Car Club. There should be a San Diego chapter.
I think forty bucks a year for fun & connections. Google it?

Look hard at the steering box mount. They are famous for breaking off the subframe, allowing the steering box to wander about. I got lucky and on my two E24s the bolts holding the box were just loose. There'a reinforcement kit available to prevent or correct a broken mount.jlbsam wrote:thanks for the info. I went to Discount and got new Kumho's in the correct size. the shark rides and drives a lot better. there is a lot of play in the steering. what would be a good place to start with replacing stuff in the front end?

Correction on that, Ken . . .
The steering box mount problem is related to the E28 chassis, not the E12, which is what would be in a MY81 type
There may be other issues underneath to deal with, but this is not one of them

E12 steering 101 :)
Yeah Ken, the E12 uses Pitman arms, but actually appears to be more robust than the E28
FWIW, I never have issues with the "dreaded 55 mph shimmy" either
Here's a pic, I hope
