TIRE WEAR

To confirm my thinking;
because of the variable steering ratio at the front of our sixes(for lack of a better term),
I sometimes hit corners medium hard so, my front tires seem to be wearing out at both edges.

I think it's normal but, what's your opinion?

I bought some used but, with a lotta tread, Michelin Pilot Sports about about 3-4 months
ago & now I didn't want to go on SoCalVintage's run lately because of the treadwear.

Is it because of what I just said?

The center is not worn; this part, I do understand.
The air pressure is maintained at 35psi, always.

Edge wear usually indicates low air pressure. What size tires, Greg? I run 40-42psi in the 225-50-16 Kumhos on both my 633 and my daughters 318is E36. Very even wear, excellent handling.

I second the low air pressure. Wide, low profile tires need upwards of 40 lbs. I think the Michelin PS3's I have on the front are at 44 psi.

Wow! I was wrong again. I thought I was over-inflating at 35psi.
I understand the effects of lower pressure.
Now I have to bump 'em up to 46 to make up for the wear & tear?
At this moment I forget the size but, I like them.
In fact I might go lower profile next. I'll need fronts fairly soon.

For some unknown reason I didn't check the tire for recommended pressure.

The outsides still have the grooves but, I can see a difference from when they were installed.

They'll say max pressure, which you can really keep them inflated near if you choose. I find that the car's recommended pressure is nearly always too low for a spirited driving style considering tire wear. Of course that all assumes there's nothing more you can do to tighten up the front suspension and steering components. If you've been running at 35 and the tire shoulders are toast it may be worth rechecking them.

You're right about max pressure stamped onto the tire being for comfort only.
I've always known that.
In one of my elongated dumb moments I never checked to see that!

I just checked the tire size & max pressure.
Max is embossed 44psi to use Ken's word. How dumb was I!?
Since 44 is embossed, I'm going to 50psi the catch some tire wear.
Tires are 215/55X16 in the front. Larger at the rear.
I'll check the psi at the rear too, which lOOKS okay but,,,,.
My front end was recently upgraded, except for the center link, which is very tight.
With a four wheel alignment, the wear is straight & true. Just too much outer wear!
I've been in & out of the slalom world through the years so my mind equals that, I guess!
I do still scoot around some corners! Never breaking the the tires loose.

N.Y. Ken, I haven't been able to post pictures, so I've given up.
I'll try again. Just imagine outer even wear & no center wear.

WHOA THERE, Nellie!

50 psi is too much. Max means max, and 50 psi will kill your handling. The tires will be really skittish, since they'll be riding on JUST the center portion of the tread.. You can run them at 44, which will be 9 psi more than what you've been using. That should be plenty to even up your wear.

Posting pictures:

1) compose text of posting
2) scroll down to "Filename" below and to the left. Now look to the right of that
3) see where it says "choose file" in a box? click that
4) it will open a browser window to explore your computer files. Find the folder where your picture you want to post is located.
5) double-click on the folder, then locate the picture you want when the folder opens
6) click on the picture file to highlight it, then click the "open" box at the lower right of that browser window
7) notice that the file name now appears to the right of the "choose file" box
8 ) this is very important...just below the file name in the box there will be another box that says "Add Attachment". Click that ONCE, then WAIT until the file name appears in the "Filename" line, and a new "Add An Attachment" space appears above your just uploaded file, with new "Filename", "Choose File" and "Add Attachment" boxes. If you don't click the "Add Attachment" and then WAIT for it to upload, it won't post.
9) You can upload 4 pictures at a time, each time going through that process. If you don't do it in that order, the picture(s) won't post.
10) when you're done uploading photos, click the "Submit" button at the bottom, and your posting should show up with the pictures attached.

Another way is to insert a hotlink to a photo on a photo hosting website. The DISadvantage to that is if your photo hosting account goes away, or the photo hosting website goes away, the photos in your thread are lost to the forum. YOU may still have them, but the link is dead so the photos won't show.

Correct. Only time you need to double-click is to open a folder.

Greg,
You can also upload your pictures to your computer and then open photoshop to edit/resize them by cropping and changing the resolution. I find that 5" x 7" seems to work well. Then when saving the new picture, it will ask for resolution and progressive scans. I save the file name with a prefix "s" to indicate I'm made the picture smaller for posting.
