Wheel and Tire options for a '84 633csi

Post by songzunhuang »

Hello, I just joined this forum and also just bought a 1984 633csi. Looking in the forum, it looks like the TRX tires that are on the car are probably not something I want to keep using and replacing.

The owner had another set of wheels in the garage that he said I could have. However, neither he nor I know if the wheel will even fit the 633. So I have 2 questions.

1) Will the wheels pictured below even fit the car?
2) Are the wheels and tires on the car worth refinishing and keeping?
3) What options do I have for a modern combination?

Thanks in advance for any info.
I'll also scour the forums a bit more. I'm sure there's bit of wisdom everywhere.

These are the wheels and tires on the car now. They say TRX on them so I am guessing they are those expensive replacements. I need options please.

If he said you can have them, that means for free to me.
Take 'em!
Hopefully you can find 5 that match. Four will do.
16X7's are a plus for you. 15X7 will work.
Read the #'s on the wheel.

I am taking them!

Post by songzunhuang »

Yup, he did say for free! There are 5 of them and I am taking them. From scouring the forums, it looks like they will work. What the heck am I going to do with the TRX wheels? Does anyone really want to deal with them due to the tire cost issue?

I guess one day it'd be good to have for originality, but meanwhile, what a pain to store the wheels. My garage is packed. ;)

Except for a very few cars/owners here, the TRX wheels have either been stored or sold for scrap. Those individuals that love the originality have kept them and forked over the (incredibly insane) cost of new TRX metric tires. I still have the full set from my 635 stored in the garage. I honestly don't know why.

Over here, the 14" bottletops were fitted to 628s, with the TRX being an upgrade. My own 635 came with metric bottletops as standard, with remould tyres which were not round!

The 14s will fit, but you will not be able to upgrade the brakes in any respect. 15s from an E34 in cross-spoke style are the cheap upgrade of choice in the UK, with an appropriate offset of ET20.

They are pretty wheels, though and balloon tyres make the standard ride height look okay.

Cheers,

Wheels on Craigslist - will it fit ok?

Post by songzunhuang »

Saw these wheels for sale.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/pts/5181858195.html

Wondering if it'll be ok on my 633 without additional spacers or something weird. Thanks.

More specs required . . .

Post by GRNSHRK »

It would be helpful if you also had the width and offset, the latter is very important in fact [-X

And while I didn't check with one of those tire fitment calculators, I think those tires are going to be too tall :-?

Cool lookin' wheels though

They are probably high offset wheels for the 3 Series. You'd have to run 20-25mm spacers to get them to the offset for our E24s.

Nice lookin' wheels but,, I suggest you stick with either 16"s or 17"X7" wide.
You don't want to look like a 'Wagon Train' going down the street!
These ole skool cars look gross on 18"s to me!
This is a grown-up type of car, not for the ditty-bop IMHO.
Nothing wrong with a ditty-bop but, I think you get my drift.
Keep pumping is with questions! =D>
Just my 2 cents,,,,Greg
Ps: What Bobbo said is of course, very important.
PPS: Did you check with the 'For Sale' section here?

No Ditty bop for me!

Post by songzunhuang »

i understand the sentiment. I'll keep a lookout for some 16 or 17. I noticed there are a ridiculous number of a cars being dismantled in Craigslist. They all appear to have wheels and tires.

I don't think I'll have issue with finding something, I'm just not so sure what to look for! I'll check out the for sale section some more.

Last time there were so many results that I fell asleep browsing. SAme probl though. I'm not quite sure what fits...

Nice 16" off of a 840

Post by songzunhuang »

OK, sorry for the newbie posts.

I came across these 16" x 7.5. I think I saw posts where these were indicated as one of the ideal sizes for a 633. This one is off of an 840.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/pts/5174944557.html

Will these fit the 633 OK?
How do I tell what the offset is for these wheels?

Very often the offset is stamped or cast into the rim. If not, this site tells you how to measure it yourself. https://www.rsracing.com/TechWheel.aspx

He's actually looking for what size will fit our cars?
I think he wants the numbers from us?
What is stamped on the wheel may not give him what he needs.
I think I've read that 120 might be the generic size needed
for our cars but, I don't want to pass on wrong info.

120 is the bolt circle diameter in millimeters, typically expressed as 5 x 120 (five lugs, 120mm bolt circle)

The offset is usually stamped or cast on the back of the wheel center, expressed as et, es, or is, such as et47, meaning it's a 47mm offset. That's considered high offset, typically seen on the 3 series cars. Our E24s take somewhere in the neighborhood of a 20mm offset wheel (et20).

The Beyern Fives on my '85 635 are high offset intended for the 3 series, 8.5 x18 et45 and 9.5 x 18 et40. I made 25mm hubcentric spacers to bring them out closer to E24 normal offsets.

Correct, I am looking for the sizes I should look for

Post by songzunhuang »

Thanks for the discussion here. It is correct that I am looking for the actual offset that I should be looking for, not just how to find the numbers for a wheel that is for sale.

So far from the responses, it looks like I should be heading for a 16" or 17" wheel. The 5 bolt patterns appear to be consistent in all BMWs so that wouldn't be the deal breaker.

The offset is what I have yet to understand. The et20 number is helpful. I do not want to use spacers or anything. I'm on the lookout for something that I can just bolt on.

There appears to be a ton of BMW wheels for sale of all types here in the Bay area. My challenge is understanding what to look for that meets the criteria I just described.

To the OP, these are still available if you're interested in RS wheels.

viewtopic.php?t=25360

I will also soon have 2 other sets of RS wheels available. One set is 16X8 et11 RS211 and a very rare set of BBS RS 061 16X8 et20. Pricing will be significantly higher for the other 2 sets. Good luck with your search.

16 x 8 with +23 offset - good?

Post by songzunhuang »

Here's another set on Craigslist that look pretty nice. Previous messages said to look for 20 offset. Is the additional 3mm on these a deal breaker?

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/5183296254.html

This coupled with a 225/50 seems like a good combination.

Sigh, the problem with buying used rims is that you can't really try them on the car before you pay for them and take them home. There's also no guarantee from the owner that it'll actually fit.

So I troll the forum. Thanks for your help.

This is why I find it hard to buy from craigslist & amazon & the like.
This is also why I mentioned 'TCD' on this website.
The wheels are already on a car that resembles yours, with fairly new tires.
Is it that you don't like the look of the wheel? If so, I understand &
will not bug you again, just be careful!

Greg, it's not that I am not interested. It's that I can't find any evidence of wheels for sale by a guy with the name TCD.

I goto the "Search" option and fill out a search for postings by TCD. I choose the "For Sale" category. A few things pop up from TCD, but none of them are wheels as far as I can tell.

So if you had a direct link, that would be greatly appreciated.

Again - will these fit and why are they different sizes?

Post by songzunhuang »

I saw these on Craigslist. They appear to be the right size rims at 16" for two but the other two tire sizes confuse me as it appears they are 15". There's a complete set for sale but two tires are 205/65 x 16 and the other two are 225/50 x 15. Why would anyone put together a set like that?

http://bakersfield.craigslist.org/pts/5132080676.html

Still confused but I do need wheels and tires soon. I put the bottlecaps on the car today and "Meh". A change is imminent.

Ralph, thanks for the post but I am going to stick with Silver wheels. I have a specific style I am looking for but I am not well enough educated in BMW wheels lingo to describe them correctly! The shame.

I've been reading the wheels and tires section, but this is definitely a case where there is just too much info! I know them when I see them. For example, here's the right style but these are 15" and I am looking for 16".

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/5173180552.html

They are listed as OEM E39 wheels.

Most big BMWs (AFAIK) have a pcd of 5x120mm. I know that the E30s are 4x100mm, as are the 2000CS (Neue Klasse) cars. However the E9s have the larger 5-bolt design.

Don't make it difficult. Go to 'cars and parts for sale'.
Scroll down till you find the author 'TCD' under Author & you will find a picture of the wheels!
In fact, I think a picture of the whole car is part of his very first post at the top!
The car is black with rust and good looking wheels w/fresh tires!
Why the heck do you go to 'search?? Stop that.
