Style 5 Rims 16x8 ET 23

Post by Sharknose »

Just wanted to consult with the forum regarding any suggestions about suitable or recommended tires for these Style 5 Rims 16x8 ET 23. I have a chance to get them at a good price and they seem to look best on the E24's.

I'm very happy with the Kumho Ecsta 4X 225-55-16s I'm running on 7.5" rims. They wouldn't look stretched on an 8" rim. Good grip wet or dry, not particularly noisy (nothing like the very noisy Goodyears that were on it).

Are these a direct swap without any modifications such as spacers for example? I understand these are BMW made rims and should fit one of their models, just want to make sure...thanks for any input.

Currently I'm using Kumho's and I'm happy with their performance.

Direct bolt-on. Should be no rubs or scrapes with a 225 tire, perhaps even wider.

Great, once I get them and a set of tires, I'll post a picture. This may take a few weeks though. [-o<

Thanks...

I also run Kuhmo KU31 Ecsta's 225 x 50 x 16 . The tyre charts I consulted all showed that the 50 series profile was an almost 100% match for the diameter of the OE 195 x 70 x 14 tyres.
I'm very happy with them and as I said on another thread , I have used them on other vehicles we have .

Re the sizing of the wheels . I've just bought a set of Style 5 , 7 x 16 et20's from an E39 . I deliberately chose the 7's over the 8's as I couldn't be sure that the latter wouldn't rub on the strut on my series one car . I have 8 x16, et16 wheels fitted at present and they are VERY close to the strut although they have not touched it . The 7 mm between the et 16 and et 23 would certainly cause it to rub.

Here's a good chart to check the effects of et and tyre size.

I "think" the geometry of series 2 ( e28)cars differs from mine ( e12 based ) with the strut at a slightly different angle so if that is correct then it may help you . Either way though shallow spacers will overcome the problem.

Speaking with Sharknose about these wheels earlier - I also have a set of Style 5's but haven't yet had chance to fit them as they're a spare set.
On the face of the wheel underneath the centre cap I see the following numbers and writing: 8Jx16H2 BMW IS23 1182277
Will these be a direct fitment on a M635, say with 225x50x16 tyres as you recommend olympia57 ?
I notice that most people state using ET23 and when looking on the reverse/inside of the wheel I can see LK120 and ET15 stamped.

cheers

Updated:
found them on realoem as E38 7 series wheels, with ET23 -

Looks promising then

- I don't suppose the hex style centre caps from the E32/34 style 5s will fit these?

I wonder if you'll have strut interference in the front. My 535 has 16X7 ET11 BBS-Mahle with 205-55, rear is 16X8 ET24 with 225-55. Speedo is dead nuts on at 65 MPH and have no tire/strut/fender lip problems. When I had 16x7 in the rear w/225-55 and the tires rubbed the fender lips. The wheels look the same from the outside, ET24 moves the 1" to the inside. Strut/shock clearance is close with ET11/ET24.

I guess the only way will be to try fitting them and if there are any snagging areas then a set of spacers will be needed.

I have the same 7 series wheels on my 635CSi. Even though it did not appear to rub, out of an abundance of caution I have 3 mm spacers in the front.

Style 5's certainly are "the look" for most BMWs and the 6 series is no exception. Looks good!

Well, this last weekend I've put on my tires on the new (used) rims and they look nice as expected. \:D/
I also did add the 1/4" spacers in the front wheels only, even though they did not seem to rub or anything, but it looked kind of right at the edge  .
