I just measured one of my RS211. Hub to barrel lip is 5 inches.

I have 17x8" wheels on my e12 635 with no issues (235/45/17 very similar to 225/50/16). I have put 12mm spacers all around with slight rubbing on full lock.

I will be trying BBS RS 211's later this week but don't anticipate any issues. Were your barrels/faces replaced possibly? A stock E28 (except for M5) won't fit et11 in the rear....

On the inner fender liner with the spacers. That would be et8 up front.

And I checked, that is with 225/45/17 tires, not the 235's.

225/50/16 BBS RS 211 fit on my 1980 635CSi.
There is some slight rubbing but I think my front springs have been cut so it sits slightly lower.

Most tire manufactures do not recommend that tire size on a 8" wheel. But most manufactures do not recommend that tires be stretched. Your car: your call
Alpina B9 coupe (Alpinweiss)
Alpina B9 sedan (Alpinweiss)
Alpina B6 clone in process (Alpinweiss)
Mini S (had to go: it was Electric Blue)
Rover Disco 1 (Alpine White)

Put on a set of Firestone indy 500 tires in 205/45/16, apparently they are now being made by Bridgestone RE003, which ive had before on my E46 and are nice tires. They finally fit. Ill get pictures this week. I took her out around some back roads and really liked the outcome, the response and feel is amazing compared to the older 205/70/14.

Nice to see it fit finally. What a good tyre chap u are dealing with. Having high quality 205 will give good grip probably better than mid range 225.

The other problem with tyres is in the same size is they are all wildly different. You could have over 1" in difference with the same size. Not great if u are looking at a marginal clearance setup.

Thank you. Yes the guys at the tire shop really took care of my requests.

That is true, ive had experience with that years ago when trying to fit really fat tires on my E46.
