225/50r16: safe on 8.5" rim? Toyo Proxes?

Post by wattsmonkey »

I realise I'm looking to hear what I want to hear with this, but I'm getting conflicting information and have (for shame) even looked at a VW forum for answers!

Some sites say 225 is the minimum width for an 8.5" rim, others say 235. The assertion that 225 is actually dangerous is what makes me concerned.

There is a dearth of choice for 235/50 or 245/45 in a 16" rim, much better for 225.

Toyo Proxes TR1 are available in all sorts of sizes and very cheap - has anyone got experience of these on an E24?

Many thanks for any input on this,

Rob

I don't understand why anyone would claim that a 225 would be dangerous on a 8.5" wide wheel. 225 is nominally an 8.858" tread width, which is a far closer match to the rim width than 235 or 245.

Thanks Ken.

The lack of choice in 245 has made my mind up. I will be choosing tyres with some sort of rim protection.

This is all a bit moot until I get my new wheels - hoping they'll fit over the Brembos!
