Style 5's sit way too far in wheel well.....

I was really surprised how far 17 x 8 Style 5 wheels sit in the wheel well. They really look "weak". As much as I have spacers, i just spent $300 on H&R bolt on 25mm spacer. Also bought hub centric rings. Will post pics after spacers.

Yes they fit a fair way in. Even on the front. Looks like the rear could use even more spacer than 25mm

This is a topic that strikes a chord with me, as at one point I spent a great deal of time deliberating and researching a non-metric but period looking wheel option for my car.

For the benefit of those who haven't looked too deeply into the subject, I found that there can be a variety of visual effects when fitting Style 5's, (which is BMW's speak for the two piece BBS RC with 5 x 120 PCD) because they are not necessarily all the same. There were numerous variations fitted to different BMWs as OEM equipment.

For example, the BBS RC090 is a 17" x 8" but with a centre bore of 74.1mm (hence the need for rings to prevent them from "rattling around" on the hub )These were commonly fitted to the E39 5 series, so are not too hard to find. I am guessing the these are the ones fitted goodm3's car.

Other BBS RC fitted to 7 and 8 series cars are more scarce, can offer a more aggressive and contemporary look, and are therefore more valuable. A decent Style 5 solution/look on an E24 (to my mind) are these staggered front and rear....

BBS RC035 17x 8", CB 72.6, ET20
BBS RC038 17"x9", CB 72.6, ET20

Personally, I think a 17 inch diameter wheel is the max for an E24, but there are also...

BBS RC061 18"x8.5", CB72.6, ET20
BBS RC062 18"x9", CB72.6, ET22

Of course, the solution of fitting spacers to push the wheels out for a more "stanced" look is an option, but there is an argument to suggest that doing so deviates too much from original and optimal suspension geometry, resulting in an adverse effect dynamics and additional strain on the suspension components.

Anyway "goodm3", your '85 M635 is a fine looking car, and I too would be keen to see pictures after those spacers have been fitted.

Keep us posted buddy.

The 8 series 17" Style 5s fill the arches on an M just right:

RC009 8" et10
RC010 9" et19

Not sure if I've remembered offsets exactly, but that's the reason I spent the money on 8er wheels rather than the much, much cheaper E39 versions. The centre bore being the right size was another reason!

My ideal set up would be the 8" "fronts" all round.

With those offset figures, I'd agree with you Rob that they would look very good indeed on an E24.
Are yours still on your car with black spokes?

They are indeed! I didn't think I'd like the black bits, but they suit the car well. The grey powder-coated lips are bubbling under the bolts (plus they are titanium nuts and bolts rather than splined originals) so a refurb will be on the cards.

Cheers,

Rob

I have ran 12mm spacers front and rear to get a better fit for wheels that are et20. Equivalent to wheels that are 16x8 et8 and there is still room in the rear (this is e12 based car fyi).

Image

This is why BBS RS 211 are a great fit 16 x 8 et11 so no spacers or hub rings required.

I don't think 10mm will be much of an adjustment to the suspension geometry to cause noticeable premature wear. I bought another set of wheels with this offset and want to refinish them and then turn them into my tracks wheels rather than the BBS RS's.

The 17" x 9"'s are hard to find, and I still think they'll need spacers. I may end up widening the rear style 5's to get the look that I want. I am not trying to get perfect flushed stance, with stretched tires, but I certainly don't like the current weak look. Below are the pictures of the OZ 18" wheels I've had on the car for a decade. The offset was nice, but they were never my favorite wheel, and I always thought 18" were just a bit big. Most importantly, the car had a shake I could never rid of. I've tried replacing suspension parts, tires, balancing and finally I thought it was the big wheels and offset hence I bought the style 5's and new Michelins. I was surprised to see the shake was STILL there with the Style 5's. Now I just figured out it was a hub centric issue all along! I can't wait to get the spacers and the hub centric rings from ECS. I went with expensive H&R's instead of the eBay ones. I can use my original studs with the H&R spacers.

I put on the H&R 25mm spacers. Looks much better in my opinion.

That does look much better. A few questions if I may ?

What size tyres ?
17x8" rims all round right ?
Suspension standard height ?
25mm spacers front and rear ?

Thank you for posting those pics with spacers fitted. I agree with the comments above - that car looks very nice indeed.

Can I also ask, are the rims RC090s???

Here's my LOCUTUS with RC090s. Looking to possibly fit spacers as goodm3 has done but just sizing it up at the moment.

As I mentioned in that thread, the "Add to Chrome" button is not clickable, so it doesn't work.

OK, here's the weirdness....I tried several times to click the "Add to Chrome" button. It never once "clicked".....but apparently it did install, because I can now see the Photobucket shots above that were previously blanked by the PS ransom note. ](*,)

I don't understand this computer stuff, I just try to use it without looking like a fool. Failed that one. :(

Hey no problem Ken glad you got it sorted !

Hoping the OP might come back to answer the questions raised. Sorry for the divergence
