The standard cross-spokes fitted to most E34s are 15-inch. They are not metric.
BUT there was another style of cross-spoke which sometimes found itself on E34s, and these were metrics, being 165TR390, which equates to 6.5"x15.3". They were more heavily dished than the standard 15-inchers described above. You can also easily identify the tyres, since they will carry the designation 230/55 R390.
..and like all cross-spokes, they're difficult to keep clean.

E12, E28, E34 5 series wheels fit no problem
E32 7 series, E31 8 series wheels fit although no wider than 9.5" at the rear.
Also E39 5 series wheels will fit, but these will need hubscentric rings which makes up the 1.2mm difference in the size of the hubs.
E36/E46 wheels will not fit unless you run massive spacers.

They sure docarrie wrote:

You may have used the spacers because of the difference in offset, rather than because they are 8" wide.....bcadmin wrote:Ah....sorry about that. These actually came off an E32 but I assume they are the same. I do have 12mm spacers in front. This is because they are 8" wides.carrie wrote:love it, not sure if i could keep them clean though.
e34 x spoke it is then (assuming you did not use spacers)
What about e12 bsed cars?

Does the same hold true for early e12 based cars? I am currently running the original 14" BBS basketweaves on my 1980 633, and would like to upgrade to at least a 15". But like Carrie, I don't want any spacers and rings. I thought I read in another post that the e12 based cars had even smaller hubs - 72.4mm maybe? vs. 74.3mm for the new cars. I would be interested to hear what some of the e12 based guys (Scott, et al) are running on theirs.
Thanks and regards,
Dale
Hi,
I'm still pretty confused about what the offset is telling me; I have E34 (I think) 17" x-spokes on my 1985 M6 which are 9" wide and have a 26mm (IS26) offset. They fit and run perfectly well.
I'm thinking of fitting some other wheels I've been offered but they are a 8" wide wheel with a 40m (ET40) offset - will they fit?
Are we all looking for an offset around 20mm ??
Does an offset above 20mm mean the wheel sits further in or out on the hub ??
How is the offset affected by the wheel width??
Can the boffins out there put me out of my miserable confusion
Many, many thanks in advance,
Sharkfan.

Responses to Bfloshark and Sharkfan . . .
Whatever fits on a later (E28 based) 6er will fit on an early (E12 chassis) 6er as well, so not to worry.
The hub deal is as follows: early hubs are 72.5 mm. That includes all 6ers, 5ers thru E34, E31 8 series as well. Beyond, the hubs were increased to 74 mm. These models include the E39 5ers and E38 7 series and anything later.
Forget about ANY wheels designed for 3 series, as the offset is too great, which would require the use of spacers, in order to be used on 6ers. Just not a good idea.
Speaking of offset, this is the measure, in millimeters, of how much of the rim sits in towards the inside, versus the centerline of the rim. For instance, a wheel with an offset of ET20 (20 mm) means that the rims sits in 20 mm from the centerline.
Offset is independent from the actual width, although they are related.
For more (and better) info, go to the main page on this site and check out the wheel/tire calculator. This will prove to be invaluable, when researching wheel and tire sizes.
Hope I didn't confuse you guys even more

Bob - you were kind enough to privately tutor me in this a few weeks ago! I have a set of wheels on the way - ended up getting a pretty good deal on a set of 15" BBS rims. Not as nice as your M5 wheels, but should do for now! Thanks again! Dale

Hey Dale! When/where did we do this, on Roadfly?
I've gone over the wheel/tire fitment issue so many times, lost count :?
Seems to me that this issue is worthy of a tech article to be written about, although it would be dull if somebody used advice, bought rubber and rims, only to find out that they rub or something else, due to unforeseen problems.
Still, there are enough "general" rules that somebody (maybe me ) could do this.
I'll check with Brian, see what he thinks

Its wheely a wheel problem!
I thought that Brucey had already done an article on this subject, buried somewhere within this forum, however, I could well be wrong.....
Its not unheard of...
