Mystery spot in the toolkit box

Post by Flex » Sat Mar 24, 2018 10:32 am

I have always thought that there were two types of tool boxes mounted in the 6 series, old one as shown below:

and the later one:

I have this one in my 1988 635CSi, it has the spot for the emergency window tool, which some peaple replace with small socket wrench (part no. 71111181418), like here:

However, in my 1980 628 CSi I have different tool box, comparing to the older one it has two additional spots, one is obvious (for part no. 71111150191) but I can't figure out what goes into second one...

Does anyone know what should be placed there? Both emergency window tool and the socket wrench do not fit...

Have a look on eBay as they pop up regularly, Early Mercs used the same..

FWIW the 1988 kit is missing the towing eye. It is also missing the long 3mm allen key that is used in the emergency window winding procedure.

In fact the '1988' kit tray looks like a pre 6/87 tray; IIRC the post 6/87 tray has a special hole for the towing eye.

cheers

the slot circled in red is for an emergeny tool for the windows. It fits over the "stem" from the motor and attaches by an allen screw in side of it that is turned with the long skinny tool with the Allen head at the end. That tool in itself fits in the handle of the small screw driver. It has a hex in the middle and I think the spark plug wrench or the 19mm wrench should turn it. The first tray is an early tray for a non sunroof car and I would bet for a car with manual windows as it doesn't have a place for the emergency windows or the "Z" shaped sun roof tool

I swore I had one of those (plastic emergency window cranks) in my 89 tool kit but don't see it. Does anyone had any extras they are willing to part with?

Not to rain on your parade, but the emergency window tool is still incorrect/missing, the emergency sunroof tool is missing, unless you have a non sunroof car, and the blue cloth is not the proper color blue to be correct.

His tool tray doesn't appear to have the recess for the sunroof tool. It should be between the pliers.
