Is it the stock radio? I do believe there are sliders on the left and right of the radio under the trim cover and they flip upwards. After they are up, you should be able to just pull the radio out.

I'm sorry to be so stupid about this but I hate to start prying on things and then have them break. Does the trim just pry off or is there some trick. I think the radio is stock it is an AM/FM with cassette and has a BMW label on. I looked through all the manuals to see if it would show pictures of how to remove the radio but could find any. Thanks for your reply. DK

We need to know which Radio you have, is it like the one below? Perhaps a pic of yours if it is different?

These radios have a small, square cover on outer edge at either side that cover holes for the mounting screws. You pry on the side of the cover towards the middle of the radio and the cover flips up. The screws have a "Special Tool" (Pentagon or 5 sided tool) to turn them, but if you are careful not to strip the head out, you can use the largest allen wrench (Hex head - 8 sided) that will fit in to release them. These screws run latches out of the side of the radio to Install/ Remove the the radio.

If this is your Radio, here is a PDF of the Radio Manual:

One of the 2 small, square covers for the Removal Screw is just the left and below the "Anti-Thift" Label. You pry on the side of the cover towards the middle of the radio and the cover flips up.

Here are the pictures of the radio. You may not see it in the pic but it has the BMW roundel on the cassette cover. I can't see any opening to insert a tool. This is in a '83 633 US car.

Bump to this from my archive search. Helping a friend with his 1983 US 633csi and can’t figure it out as well. Hoping whole console doesn’t need to come out.

I'd suspect that your HU is fitted using one of these ,

This fits into the aperture for the radio in the dash and then the radio cassette player slides into it with an interference fit .
You'll notice the stampings on the cage , once suitably bent these allow it to grip the edges of the dash opening to retain it .
I'd give your radio cassette a gentle but firm pull to see if it slides out of the cage , do remember that they are designed to be a tight fit so it may require a good pull.
Good luck

If you have this style radio mount, try pulling the outer rectangle frame around radio off.

Then you'll need a removal tool that will slide on both sides to release the tabs holding the radio.

here are some styles of tools
