rear parcel shelf repairs, pics...

Post by slofut »

Got my rear shelf out and it was a bit dry and flaky (sounds like a shampoo commercial doesn't it). I really don't have time for a full rebuild, so I pulled all the old vinyl off, leaving most of the degraded padding underneath and covered with a layer of fiberglass cloth.
It seemed to work out pretty well actually. The padding soaked up the resin well, so did the fiberboard and really made for a stiffer and more substantial unit. Corners and narrow places were broken and this fixed them right up. I'm going to cut 6 inch holes in the metal shelf and through this to mount 6.5 inch woofers in (I did this in my '87) and I'll put a mid/tweet to the side underneath the grilles.

If I can stay on task here, I plan to cast fiberglass speaker covers using the originals as molds. I have a few of both kinds, and some with good vinyl and some I've stripped and powdercoated the metal frames to experiment with. I'll post more pics when I get this finished out and recovered, probably going to use carpet.

Dean,

That is a good job with the fiberglass and carpet.
Waiting to see the speaker covers also.

Best,
