Replacing A/C Blower Motor

Post by VGrill635 »

Gentlemen: '88 lhd U.S. Spec 635
My A/C Blower died end of last summer. So I'm at the housing (see photo) ans would like to remove the motor without yanking the entire unit and disconnecting the freon lines in the engine compartment. For the life of me I can't see any set screw or friction or pressure nuts holding the fan cages to the motor shaft. Searches for threads regarding the blower motor and could not find anything hence this post.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Sorry for the photo size. On my iPhone and not a super tech.

In an effort to pursue the purist state of bimmer nirvana, I will remove it completely and recondition the whole schnitzel!

The two plastic covers should unclip as there is a plastic prong in the back. Be gentle as you need these covers

The motor and the squirrel cages are balanced units. There should be a spring clip under what looks like metal foil tape. The power is supplied to the motor through two push on connectors.

I don't know if new brushes are available, but that may be the problem along with a lack of lubrication of the blower shaft bearings. See my thread on that discussion. Oil, even in a drop amount will introduce an oil smell into the cabin "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" Synthetic lube (1 drop only) might be a better alternative.

Also, re-wrap the electrical lines with new TESA tape.

More pics please,
Ken

Chris: Thanks for the feedback. The links you posted seem to be dead. Can you repost them? :(

Clear your cache and try again, Chris. I'm getting the same "unavailable" message.

Page 64-11 is the page to go to. Look for the "retaining strap" after you remove the fan shells. The motor pops right out, but don't yank until you disconnect the power leads.
