I have scrapped the M's aircon and want to make some use of the cubbyhole for storage - plus I love the link to the E9 that the incongruous bit of wood gives.
I am tempted to split the gauges up and use a headlamp adjusting mount for the voltmeter and have the two important gauges in the cubbyhole on a separate mounting,
Defo don't want to mount in ashtray or on dash top.

I'm adding more gauges into another panel which will be below the steering wheel, but these will be less important.

What do your existing gauges show and what will your new gauges show?
I only wanted oil-pressure and volts on my M635 so procured some small VDO gauges from a Volvo 480 and fitted them inside the ashtray; they are backlit and but I can also still use the ashtray lid to cover them for a completely original look.

The dash mounted gauges show oil pressure, oil temperature, volts and auto gearbox temperature. The new gauges will show fuel pressure and possibly lambda or maybe power steering oil temperature...oh dear
Originality is not what I'm going for here, but the vents can be easily replaced if required. The issue is that I drive my car to the furthest extremes of Europe (the picture above was taken somewhere close to the arctic circle in Sweden) and so have to have as many systems monitored as possible in case some "in the field" diagnosis is needed.
