Re: Cigarette Lighter
AFAIK, you've got to pull the console out as a piece - that's how I've always done it. There are two screws which aren't immediately obvious, one you get at with the glove box open, and the other with the lower dash panel on the driver's side removed. Not a bad job, really. While you're in there, replace the OBC illumination, if needed, and you can get some more flow out of the A/C fan by trimming the inner panels back a bit:

Re: Cigarette Lighter

Re: Cigarette Lighter
Dean, don't you have to start pulling screws at the rear AC console to get that out? Please say no... I've always had to start in the back and pull everything loose to the front just to get the gearshift console out. I'd love to know there's a better way.

Re: Cigarette Lighter
My car doesn't have the rear A/C, so as I recall, it was pretty simple to pull the shifter console out. It wasn't much fun putting the panel under the driver's dash back in, and you need to drop the glove box, but that's all I remember. By coincidence, I'm pulling the console out again this weekend, as I traded my English OBC to "panthercity" (Tony) for a German one, and I need to uphold my end of the bargain and complete the swap.

Re: Cigarette Lighter
Dean,
I don't mean to hijack, and it's still relevant to the original question anyway. But my ciggy lighter socket is flopping about in the console, and the whole thing will push through the hole. I don't see at a glance, a way for it to fasten into the hole. Any ideas?
Btw, I wish mine was a euro. I passed on a couple back when I bought my '87 because nobody wanted them, all that foreign language stuff on the dash and grey market stigma.
Wish I could have known.

Re: Cigarette Lighter
Just got the console out - took maybe 15 minutes. My cigarette lighter is missing entirely, but the lighted ring is still in place. I've got a few choices about what I'll mount in that opening. One is a generic 12V socket with a cap, and the other is a housing about the same size as the hole, but it has 2 USB power ports. I'll have more time to look at it tomorrow. I'll post some pictures of the unmodified console and the completed project. The important thing was to get the OBC out for Tony, who has been patiently waiting for my half of the trade.

Re: Cigarette Lighter
I just installed this 12V socket/USB adapter in the open lighter socket my 635 has had since I purchased it:
https://www.amazon.com/RCLITE-Waterproo ... er+adapter
Here's the underside of the console (no cigarette lighter present):
The light ring easily broke off, with the persuasion of a small screwdriver (ash try will still be lighted):
Here's the new 12V socket installed:
And, from the bottom (I'll use JB Weld to hold it in place):
Here's the removable dual USB adapter:
And, inserted:
Finally, with the rubber cap in place:
