As the title asks:

I was replacing the dash bulbs with LED's and planning to button up the new hedunit install when I came across this piece? What is it, and where does it belong? It's obviously a sensor of some sort, but I'm stumped.

I've seen similar items before. I think it should fit into the plenum chamber. If you look around, I'm sure you'll see where it should locate.

I believe that's true, but I haven't found the hole yet, which is reportedly in the heater box. This reply on myE28.com has some interesting detail:

Update: Got the probe back in today, with very little effort. The opening is on the left upper side of the heater box, facing straight toward the rear of the car - thus, the probe faces straight forward. It's not a super-snug fit, so I used a little caulking to hold it in place for good.
