Installing Seat Struts

Post by jps635 »

In the process of replacing gas seat struts.

Did a bit of head scratching on how to compress them for installation.

First off, on my seats, only one mounting end is captive so had to open up one end of each strut with dremel and cutting wheel + file

The base struts are slightly larger dia (500N) and need to be compressed almost fully.

The back struts are only need to be compressed maybe 20mm.

Found it was easier to invert the seat over the back of a soft chair.

Modified a carpentry slide clamp (not really ideal). First off tried gluing some sandpaper to the jaws but this didn't work, so whacked some grooves in with the dremel.
A econd pair of hands to hold the clamp in place while I used a large multi grip to pump the clamp with the open end in place. (I could only squeeze the clamp up by hand when leaning directly over with one jaw on the floor, not on the seat) Once the closed end aligns to its mounting pin tap it on with a hammer and small wood drift (piece of kindling).

Replace the retaining clip on the fixed end(s)

Can't figure out why my photos please themself on which way they orient themselves
