Sunvisor Mirror light upgrade

Post by dwcains »

I recently scored a nice set of natur-colored leather visors for my '85, and after dyeing them black with the great SEM products, I wanted to upgrade the mirror light. The process literally took less time than it will for me to type this post. I had been thinking about it for a while, though, and I have a box of various LEDs left over from other projects, so there were many possible choices. In the end, I chose a flexible LED strip I had, with 36 LEDs, easily soldered to the terminals inside the visor's mirror compartment:

I broke some little pieces if plastic when I pulled out the mirror, so I had to use tiny dabs of JB Weld on the tabs of the mirror:

Here's the lighted mirror with the room lights on:

And, in the dark:

Big improvement over the brown-tinted, dim lighting the mirror originally had.

Nice job. My fear is that I break the little plastic tabs.

I did. A few dabs of epoxy hold the mirror in place now. The mirror is also still available from BMW for less than $15 last time I checked.

That's really nice! Thanks for sharing. Do you have a part number, or where would I find this strip of LEDs?

Thanks again,

It's just a generic, flexible LED strip - they're all over eBay. Example;
