Rear sunshade no longer retract

Post by Tommys 89 635 »

My sunshade no longer retracts, can it be fixed? Can these be taken apart and fixed? If not, I'll be looking for one for my 89. Thanks

<t>Yes,

You'll have to take out the back shelf. Drill out the rivets on one side
of the shaft, wind up the shade and re-rivet the end cap to hold the tension on the spring.
Not a fun job. Years later, it happened again. Not this time, I now leave it rolled up
on top of the back shelf snugged against the rear window. Stays put even on track days.
Good luck
Thanks for tip. When you drilled out the rivets, what actually happen to your shade?

after your repair, does your shade retract?

I'd definitely want to try and fix it.

Years ago I replaced it with a new one.

It worked fine when I tested after the fix.

Decided to use it on a sunny day after parking, then blammo --spring unraveled again.

The shade shaft tips are inserted into the end caps.

To wind up the shade, IIRC only one cap has to be removed

to rewind the spring.

Bob,

I drilled the one side of the rivets out, rewinded the shade, re-revited it and no luck. No tension/retracting as I pull out the shade. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Anyone else tried to fix their sunshade?

Thanks
