Blower problem

Hi all

The blower on my 89 E24 only seems to work at full speed - nothing happens when turning the dial until it gets to the end when some mechanism can be felt to engage and the fan comes on full speed. Any clues on the cause / remedy? Note - if i turn the a/c on, then i *can* adjust the speed.

Thanks

Try using the "search" function in the top R/H corner.

Sounds like the blower motor going bad. I can have mine on low speed and I get a squeaky sound, turn the speed to high it goes away.

Oil the bearings πŸ˜‰

true, oil would be good but since it will need to be taken apart, I'll go for a new part so I don't have to worry about it for years to come. [-o<

Thanks Ron - definitely sounds like its the heater blower transistor then as all other features work, just the heater that has the high speed issue. I'm not overly keen on the soldering idea but couldn't tell from searching if the board itself is still available as a straight swap, would anyone know?

Had the same problem myself i.e. only full speed blower. Used the troublshooting steps to ID the transistor in the actual blower dial itself as being faulty.

Swapped both transisters (blower speed switch in dash which is a pain to get in and out, also the one on firewall as its easy so may as well - only takes 5 minutes to do if the you are lubing the blower under the scuttle).

Unfortunately neither fixed the issue.

Had to take the plunge and buy the blower speed switch in the dash from BMW, came to Β£191 inc VAT as its the air con one, if you dont have aircon the switch is 'only' Β£140ish.

Fitted this weekend... success.

Now all i need to do is tackle converting the air con [-o<

It’s a ten-minute job to remove the blower motor, oil the bearings and replace itπŸ˜‰

Once again a seemingly easy job proves anything but. The nut & bolt pair holding the board in have rusted solid - no surprise there, but there's almost no room at all to get a spanner or a socket on the nut at the back, and *WHY* is the bolt a screw head not a hex??? Surely this can't be original - anyone have any tips on getting these out - do i have to remove the wiper linkage to make more room at the back?

Thanks - going to need a new drill attachment to get at the angle needed....

Managed to get the front one out with a screwdriver bit in a socket - had to take the blower bracket and wiper linkage out to get a socket on the back tho! Second one wasn't moving so used gentle persuasion to wiggle the nut through the casing :D .

Cleaned and oiled the motor and vacuumed out the intake, new board in place with new bolts and variable fan back to working order!
