Not as far as I am aware. Certainly never seen one on any of my 30+ E24s I've owned over the years.

Plus 1, or should I say, minus 1 #-o

No cabin filters have ever been fitting to an E24 [-X

Thanks Pod. That is why I could not find it. I would like to avoid bad air coming from engine room so maybe i need to think about the solution.

Sounds as if you have a "leak" in the firewall. There are several access holes which should be rubber-sealed. Its quite likely that one or more of these has either failed or become detached. I suggest you get your head under the dash and have a look with a torch. Easy enough to re-seal with a proprietory sealant product.

You may also want to check if you have any oil leaks that may vaporize hitting the hot engine and then getting into your cabin.

the above shows a standard engine bay. You can see that the area around the top of the scuttle panel (where the windscreen wiper motor, ABS ECU, third horn, intensive reservoir and interior fan motor sit) is edged with a rubber piece. This rubber piece seals against the underside of the bonnet (hood) so that only air that comes through the slotted vents in the bonnet (hood) makes it into the cabin air intake.

BTW when the car is moving at any speed, there is substantial positive pressure at the base of the windscreen, and air is pushed into the fresh air intake; the pressure is higher than in the engine bay so engine fumes don't get into the cabin even if the seal is slightly leaky. However at low speeds the seal needs to be in good condition; otherwise engine bay air gets into the cabin.

By contrast this one (modified to group A spec)

has no seal and even if one were fitted it would leak air anyway. Not one for sitting in traffic!

FWIW whether you have a filter on the cabin air or not, it is important to exclude engine bay air with the seal. IME most dust that gets into the cabin comes from when the car is parked; quite often when the fan is first started, there is a small waft of dust which has fallen down near the air intakes when the car was parked.

That seal is/was NLA in Europe a few years ago when I restored my M635CSi but I managed to find a NOS one from somewhere in Germany - my old one was buggered and the new seal did make a huge difference to engine smells.

On another note has anyone ever thought about trying to fabricate wire or foam (or probably both) filters for the standard vent fan intakes to stop the leaf debris?

the plastic grilles under the bonnet slots stop the worst of it; most of what gets in there is mostly small stuff, so a grille to stop stuff from getting into the fan itself would have to have a very small mesh size to it. Note also that the cover is sealed along its length by foam strips; these are often in poor condition yet without them air (and debris) will get in along the length of the cover.

I have wondered about adding a cowl over the bonnet slots through. Possibly this would work best if the opening faced backwards.

I meant at either end of the black metal cowl under the bonnet.

yes I know, but anything that is in danger of getting sucked in there has to get past rubber seals and/or the bonnet louvres (which have plastic grilles beneath) first, doesn't it...?
