OBC dsiplay gone dark

Post by monoi »

Hi all,

I wondered if someone has gone through the experience of an OBC display gone dark suddenly? I think the info are still displayed, just not backlight.

Also, whilst pressing the buttons to see if it made a difference, the timer button's red light came on and is not going off. Is that related?

I'm hoping that there is a simple fix like a blown fuse somewhere...

Hi Monoi

Shine a torch on the display and see if you can still see the numbers if so most likely the light bar for the display has blown

I take it you have a RHD car if you are from London. If so, remove the stereo and you should be able to access the OBC slide the light bar out of the top of the unit using needle nose pliers

Once you have it out connect it to a 9 volt battery and test to see if it lights up if not

Garagistic do a LED conversion using your existing white bulb holder https://store.garagistic.com/13-button- ... conversion

The red timer light only means that the stopwatch on the OBC is running. Push the set-res button and it should stop

Hi Daz,

Thank you very much for that. The numbers are still visible and seem to function as expected so I will do what you suggest.

Is the light bar consisting of normal bulbs?

I ordered the garagistic thing.

Is that common for both bulbs to blow out at the same time? Or is it that if one blows, the other won't work?

You are correct. If one bulb blows the other will not work

The bulbs are actually soldered on to the board

Hope the new light bar fixes the problem

635 manual

Post by rhanley 635csi89 »

Monoi,

Here's a link for the complete 88/89 635 manual, note it's for US cars, however, many functions are the same for Euro cars. The manual is invaluable at times. Roger

Light bar arrived, radio removed, pliers to pull the light bar out, swapped new for old, inserted back and lo and behold, it works!

Thank you again.

Thought I'd follow the very simple instructions especially seeing I also have a RHD car.

Radio out, easy enough as it doesn't work and needs replacing. Got my needle nose pliers and found there's a screw fitting obstructing the easy as pie removal process. Any suggestions???

The light bar went past that, but on mine the screw is missing so there might have been enough movement. Tried to fit a new screw afterwards but its nigh on impossible and I have a loose screw somewhere below it now...

Maybe gentle persuasion might help in your case.

Monoi, I cannot see what the screw is for but the tab at the top of the white end hits the black section so I'm not sure if removing the screw itself will achieve much. I might have to invest in a small pair of multi grips as the needle nose pliers don't give much grip other than to apply gentle force.

Does the little tab at the top do anything. If not, I may have better luck trying to cut it off with a dremel or sharp chisel/knife.

So, turned out there wasn't just the screw section in the way, but a strengthening rib also that stopped the front of the white edge from moving. At this stage I got the dremel out and within no time at all, I had the elusive holder out.
Unfortunately, my less than perfect soldering skills ruined the light base board whilst trying to remove the old globes so a new garagistic piece has been ordered.
Now I wait.
